For teen readers who adopt eReading, it appears the whole pie grows.

A recent PubTrak survey from R.R. Bowker indicated that teens remain reluctant when it comes to e-books. Accustomed to social media, they find that electronic stories have “too many restrictions,” according to the report.

Achuka's Michael Thorn on how being a publisher is different from being a reviewer or an author :: Blog :: Nosy Crow | App-books | Scoop.it

Michael Thorn is the founder of Achuka, a children’s book, and now more general book website begun in 1997. Achuka has been a review and news website, but Michael wants to be a digital publisher and so created ACHUKAbooks. Just last week, he published his first book: a digital edition of The Field Bill Nagelkerke. A writer and reviewer, Michael tweeted about how different the experience of being a publisher was from his other book-connected roles, and I asked him to do a guest blog about the experience of being a first-time publisher.

2012 Digital Perspectives: The Bookseller and Librarian | FutureBook

2012 Digital Perspectives: The Bookseller and Librarian | FutureBook | App-books | Scoop.it

The challenge is to acknowledge this and respond quickly and positively to make it economically viable and rewarding for all. Spotify’s and Netflix’s relentless progress should have taught us all that digital on demand is both viable and potentially game changing. Also anyone who believes that a digital music and film files are inherently different from a digital book files, needs to now think again.

We do not see a viable independent digital model today. Rather than build a viable digital co-operative distribution repository and service, the associations have chosen a 'quick fix' and one that merely gives away store brand and community to white label aggregators for a small commission. Other than in a superficial manner, this is not going to engage independents with the digital market and its consumers and is not sustainable for the future.

The Year of Transmedia Reading | Good E-Reader - ebook Reader and Tablet PC News | App-books | Scoop.it

As 2011 came to close and predictions were made for the future of the publishing industry, several sources within the industry supported the idea that transmedia reading was going to see huge gains in popularity this year as readers come to expect more from the technology behind e-reading and as authors and publishers clamor to stand out in the vast crowd of ebooks.
So far, one of the largest audiences for transmedia content has been children’s book buyers. Several companies have grown exponentially due to the readily available consumer base who want their children to read engaging content, yet also love the convenience and educational opportunities that digital reading affords them.

Is iBooks a big deal? :: Blog :: Nosy Crow

Is iBooks a big deal? :: Blog :: Nosy Crow | App-books | Scoop.it

As had been widely predicted, yesterday Apple made some big announcements related to their iBooks platform. They’ve launched two important new projects: iBooks 2.0, the updated version of their popular e-reading app, which now allows for enhanced, integrated multimedia (especially suited for academic textbooks), and iBooks Author, a free self-publishing tool for Mac users.

As soon as the news was out, Kate and I found ourselves asking, ‘what do we make of this?’ The same question was seemingly being echoed by publishers all over the internet, on Twitter and blogs and The Bookseller, and I was struck by several things.

Firstly, a lot of people in the publishing industry seem to be so poised for bad news that they see it even when it’s not there. There have undoubtedly been a lot of developments in the past 12 months ...

"One thing we hear louder than anything else is student engagement, inspiring kids to want to discover and learn," Schiller said, according to MacWorld. "That's why we get excited to see student reactions to iPads in the classroom.'

App Textbooks on the iPad, Apple hopes, will replace the physical textbook, which Schiller labeled as too heavy, expensive, not portable, not durable, and not interactive. Though modern textbooks have "great content," according to Schiller, they are "clearly not the ideal learning tool anymore."

Apps for children: It’s a booming market

Apps for children: It’s a booming market | App-books | Scoop.it

Away from the hype that surrounds some of the hottest Internet companies in Silicon Valley, scores of developers are tackling the lucrative, accelerating sector of technology for children. “Backpacks will slowly shrink… Textbooks will pretty soon be delivered on tablets,” says Warren Buckleitner, editor of Children’s Technology Review, a publication that since 1993 has been tracking new releases and trends in this increasingly busy domain. “It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.”

The boom in technology designed around children’s needs was catalyzed by the launch of Apple’s iPad in 2010, says Buckleitner, a former teacher with a Ph.D. in educational psychology. The tablet, he says ...

The 2011 CYBILS Literary Awards – Seven iPad Book Apps to Make the Cut | The Digital Media Diet

The 2011 CYBILS Literary Awards – Seven iPad Book Apps to Make the Cut | The Digital Media Diet | App-books | Scoop.it

Book apps have been around since the iPhone launched apps in 2008, although it wasn’t until the larger screen option with the iPad in 2010 that they really caught fire in the book blogging community. As these apps (and my own role as book critic) straddle this line between apps and books, I find that the increased attention from the literary community is deeply refreshing.
