By looking at these pictures you can see that the water just completely ruined this road. The road sunk in and collapsed as well. Will this road ever be safe to drive on again if it gets fixed?

National helicopters caught these pictures along the Thompson river while the water rages next to a road. The destruction of the water and its erosion had deteriorated the road.

One of the other dangers the ship and passengers can suffer are external, such as attacks by pirates. Armed robbers, using assault rifles and other rocket launchers, using high-speed boats, have been an increasing problem for ocean liners, and even commercial ventures, since approximately 2003. This has resulted in robberies of passengers and even deaths off the coast of Somalia. Even a famous movie with Tom Hanks, was made about one such attack here:

California's Drought

California's Drought | ApocalypseSurvival | Scoop.it

"California has had three consecutive years of below average rainfall and most reservoirs are far below their designed capacity; for a state with a growing population with limited water resources this is alarming news that has many politicians, officials and residents worried. This winter was especially mild; nice for bragging to friend back East about how gorgeous the weather is during a polar vortex spell, but horrible for the snow pack and accumulation."

Via Seth Dixon
more...
Seth Dixon's curator insight, April 10, 2:45 PM

Most of California’s water originates for the snow pack in Western mountains ranges so this drought is expected to get worse this summer. The major urban areas have limited local water resources so they draw water from large area to bring in sufficient water for these burgeoning metropolitan regions.

Questions to Consider: What are some reasons human and physical geographic for this severe drought? What can be done in the short-term to lessen the problem? What can be done to make California’s water situation better for the next 50 years?

Book Review: American Apocalypse | ApocalypseSurvival | Scoop.it
WITH THE ECONOMY IN FREE FALL AND
MILLIONS THROWN OUT OF WORK, AMERICA’S FRAGILE
DEMOCRACY COLLAPSES.
The federal government is left powerless, police and military forces disband, and a once-proud America descends into lawless anarchy. Cities empty. Looting, violence and murder quickly become the norm. And desperate citizens are left to fight for their very survival. Amid the chaos, one teenager finds himself homeless and alone, striving to stay alive on the outskirts of a crumbling Washington, D.C. Forced to adapt by the constant threat of starvation and violence, the young man finds himself developing survival skills he never imagined needing and a moral sense that gives meaning to his struggle. American Apocalypse is a riveting coming-of-age story where one man, against all odds, must find the will to live and, in turn, become a fledgling force of justice.

Bye-Bye, Baby

Bye-Bye, Baby | ApocalypseSurvival | Scoop.it
Birthrates are falling around the world. And that’s O.K.

Why do commentators, like Chicken Little, treat this worldwide trend as a disaster, even collective suicide? It could be because declines in fertility rates stir anxieties about power: national, military and economic, as well as sexual. In reality, slower population growth creates enormous possibilities for human flourishing. In an era of irreversible climate change and the lingering threat from nuclear weapons, it is simply not the case that population equals power, as so many leaders have believed throughout history. Lower fertility isn’t entirely a function of rising prosperity and secularism; it is nearly universal.

This op-ed from the New York Times provides excellent material for discussing demographic issues, especially regarding declining populations.  Many countries do fear the demographic uncertainty and are actively encouraging pro-natalist policies (with salacious ads such as Singapore's National Night and a Travel agency's 'Do it for Denmark' campaign).  The author of this article though, seeks to quell those fears.

Chile is a country that is hit by the majority of earthquakes in the world. The reason for that is the Ring of Fire in the ambit of which it lies. This volcanic circle off the Pacific Coast is further augmented by the Nazca fault lines thereby making the area vulnerable to geological disturbances.

Mijnbouw en aardverschuivingen, een goede combinatie ......

PIRatE Lab's curator insight, April 7, 11:48 AM

There are several reasons for mudslides--some are purely a result of physical geography and others are related to land use patterns.  This last week's mudslide in Washington state was a combination of the two and although this impacts one place (see on map), it is a good teaching moment to discuss the environmental impacts of land use patterns and resource extraction projects.  As seen in this interactive, the river was cutting at the base of the hill, while loggers were clear-cutting at the top of the mountain.  Trees help prevent erosion as the roots hold the soil in place--a critical piece to the puzzle in a very rainy climate.  With $1 million worth of timber on the slope, logging companies persisted despite objections from the Department of Natural Resources and some restrictions (but in hindsight, those restrictions clearly were not enough).

View the impact in ArcGIS online: Before and After Swipe, LiDAR I and II, and Imagery.

Questions to Consider: Other than economic worth, what other ways are there to value and evaluate the environment?  How could this landscape have been protected and managed better or was this mudslide inevitable?

What the loss of Crimea really means for Ukraine

What the loss of Crimea really means for Ukraine | ApocalypseSurvival | Scoop.it

"In symbolic terms, it's a huge loss. The Crimean Peninsula holds an important place in the region's history, and the inability to prevent the region from joining Russia is a serious test of leadership for the new Ukrainian government in Kiev.

In practical terms, however, what Crimea means for Ukraine is less clear. In an article last week, The Post's Will Englund noted that Crimea may end up costing Russia more than it might like. And what does Ukraine really lose?"

Why It's a Big Deal That Half of the Great Lakes Are Still Covered in Ice

Why It's a Big Deal That Half of the Great Lakes Are Still Covered in Ice | ApocalypseSurvival | Scoop.it

"More than 200 million tons of cargo, mostly iron ore, coal, and grain, travel across the Great Lakes throughout the year. Even a little ice can make a big dent on this total. Only three shipments of coal were loaded up during March – 69 percent less, by volume, than last year.  A sluggish start to the shipping season is just one of the cascading effects of the Midwest's cold and icy winter. Some are good, and will allow the region to recover from years of historically low water levels. Others, like this delayed shipping season, less so."

The Bermuda triangle 'stories' fascinates me ~ some of these 'plane' mysteries are baffling! One here says that the. The Star Dust (1947) wasnt discovered till 50yrs later! I also read in another article that Amelia Earhart's wreckage was found in 2013 by TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) team  (read that here: http://news.discovery.com/history/us-history/amelia-earhart-plane-lockheed-electra-sonar-130615.htm)

Nikole Maroe's curator insight, March 18, 1:03 PM

This article was shocking and mysterious. The fact that we are dealing with a plane that has disappeared and there are no clues or anything that could help find the plane, is just shocking. It brings up so many unanswerable questions. Where did it go? Was it an accident? High-jackers? Why is there an oil leak, but no sign of a plane?

After reading this article though it was brought to my attention that this has happened a number of times through out history. And the usual the final result is that it is undetermined and it gets left as that. Which is saddening for the families and friends of the passengers and crew of the plane. From what I have read and seen on the News, Malaysia is doing whatever than can to get closer to ending out what exactly happened.
