The Five Axioms of the API Economy

The Five Axioms of the API Economy | API Magazine: About APIs and Developer Evangelists | Scoop.it
The Five Axioms of the API Economy A definition of the API Economy: building on five Axioms. Axiom #1: Everything and Everyone will be API Enabled
Manfred Bortenschlager's insight:

This is an attempt to formalise the foundations of the API Economy using five Axioms:

Everything and everyone will be API enabled.

APIs are core to every cloud, social and mobile computing strategy.

APIs are an economic imperative.

Organizations must provide their core competence through APIs.

Organizations must consume core competences of others through APIs.

This is a multi-part series. The first part introduces the model and gives details about the first axiom.

Fascinating!

And could serve as a basis for the evolution of further models to explain the dynamics in the API ecosystem or API economy.

4 Things You Should Know About Platforms

4 Things You Should Know About Platforms | API Magazine: About APIs and Developer Evangelists | Scoop.it

Power no longer resides at the top of the heap, but at the center of the network; that is in platforms.

Manfred Bortenschlager's insight:

"Steve Jobs didn’t want to build an app store. As Walter Isaacson describes in his biography of Apple’s founder, the famously controlling Jobs was wary of the “bandwidth” needed to police a veritable army of third party developers. At first, he wouldn’t even discuss it.

Yet eventually, even Jobs had to relent and the App store has become an enormous success. Last year, developers reaped $15 billion on the platform. In fact, third party apps have become so central to the iPhone, it’s hard to imagine it without them. Increasingly, products are becoming platforms.

How to Build a Successful API Strategy

How to Build a Successful API Strategy | API Magazine: About APIs and Developer Evangelists | Scoop.it

...And there’s no question that APIs provide businesses much more flexibility and agility than the old-fashioned custom integrations businesses have used in the past to connect systems together.

Manfred Bortenschlager's insight:

"When thinking about developing your API strategy, there are considerations you need to take into account as you begin, both as a consumer and provider of APIs. The business needs to think about API governance; who controls the development, maintenance, and life cycle of APIs; and whether the right tools are in place to manage API consumption and delivery."

APImetrics - Adds Support for SOAP APIs

APImetrics - Adds Support for SOAP APIs | API Magazine: About APIs and Developer Evangelists | Scoop.it
APImetrics strengthens its API Performance Monitoring solution to support legacy SOAP API protocols in the enterprise.
Manfred Bortenschlager's insight:

APImetrics announced that their API monitoring and analytics solution now also supports SOAP. That is quite a big thing. First, because it is a lot more challenging to monitor and analyse SOAP based APIs end-to-end than it is with REST-based APIs.

Second, I have no figures but a large part of enterprise IT systems (esp. legacy backend) use SOAP. So, for these organisations it is good news because they get much better performance visibility.

3. All within one model.

Business benefits.

Side effects.

"Mobile Backend as a Service, [...] or an API backend is a way for developers to link their software and application to cloud-based storage, making it easier to link up with software development kits and APIs."

According to this article APIs are emerging in industries, which:

- Are large;
- Are fragmented;
- Have unique data security concerns; and

Manfred Bortenschlager's insight:

My comment following up an article by McKinsey&Company Insights. It is a good piece of research. However, the focus on "mobile-first" is a bit misleading. I argue with API-first to reduce tight coupling to channels but allow real omnichannel strategies.

Why a great integration API isn’t enough

Why a great integration API isn’t enough | API Magazine: About APIs and Developer Evangelists | Scoop.it
You need a strong community, templates and tools to support your already-stellar API
Manfred Bortenschlager's insight:

What does it need for a great and successful API? According to this article: "three core elements needed for easy and effective integration: a solid API, great templates and tools, and a strong community."

Especially the second one is what we also refer to as API use cases. Identify the most use cases most valuable to your business as well as to your developers and focus on supporting these specifically. But at the same time design the API so that it is flexible and does not exclude uses which lie outside of these use cases.

This is why API design is an art.
