I think if departments reviewed their faculty, it would become clear to them which teachers should *not* be forced into using technology in the classroom. Questionably, if those teachers cannot teach the assigned material any longer, they may be driven to learn it in order to keep their jobs, but honestly, if teachers don't possess these traits in today's world, the only thing they should probably be driven to is a different job.... This is why I keep harping on educators to join Twitter--it's function let's it occupy a different ecological niche than Facebook. This function is towards professional and personal interests, and not based on who you already know. In other words, you can absolutely be a professional on Twitter and get a professional network that will help facilitate your growth.

The professional workforce has been quick to adopt new technology tools. We readily accept that tablets and smartphones, teleconferencing and social media are now essential fixtures of the workplace for millions across the globe. Yet we've been slow in extending these advances to our schools, and in particular our K-12 schools. While many children's home lives are abuzz with the same platforms and devices as the 21st century workplace, school just hasn't kept pace, and in many classrooms pedagogies are barely more inclusive of new technology than they were in the 1980s. There is already evidence that teachers are using social media as part of teaching strategies, with the aim of encouraging students to view social networks as less of a pleasurable distraction, and more as something that can be used in projects and for personal expression in a medium they prefer. The use of social media for learning is essential, particularly in secondary (high schools). Too many teens are engaged with social media, for fast periods of time, with no return on their investment. Schools and their pupil's would benefit from the social media angle.

The two teachers admit when they started flipping their classrooms they put everything into video form. Now, they’ve taken a step back and realized some things shouldn’t be in lecture form, and therefore shouldn’t be videos either. Instead, the two teachers have embraced what they call mastery learning, with an emphasis on students taking control of their own learning. Instructional videos are an optional part of a bigger move towards asynchronous learning.

ReScooped, but I want to raise some questions about some of the key values eportfolios offer such as peer interaction and social learning and integrative knowledge and reflection. This 3-step process seems to make it all look very simple, but there's a good deal of educational transformation and adjustment to new pedagogical practices that go along with these three steps.

That learning takes place in a social context is a significant issue. This is why collaboration or ‘cooperative learning’ has become so popular – but it has to be more than social collaboration. I have recently read the book the Wizard of Oz with my children and the book fits this hypothesis much more accurately than the movie does. The Emerald City wasn't truly that color but everyone was force to wear emerald-colored glass (hence, they all believed that the ordinary things had extraordinary monetary value).
Henry Littlefield's "Parable on Populism" covers this hypothesis in great detail and is worth the read.
I have been discussing this hypothesis with my classes for years..finally a short video to promote discussion!
