Michelin and Siemens Test Cost of Electric Vehicles Versus Gas Cars | PluginCars.com

Michelin and Siemens Test Cost of Electric Vehicles Versus Gas Cars | PluginCars.com | AP micro research paper | Scoop.it

In January, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development granted Michelin and Siemens $2.6 million to fund a project called Baden-Württemberg LivingLab BWe mobil. The three-year project aims to prove that electric vehicle are less expensive than gas- and diesel-powered automobiles, despite high initial purchase prices. Research assistance will be provided by he Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research.

Staff members from Michelin and Siemens frequently commute between facilities in Germany and France, using internal combustion vehicles. So the costs for liquid fuel are well know. In the study, these employees will instead commute in electric vehicles, to carefully study the cost of fuel and other expenses.

"If electric mobility is to be successful in Europe, it has to be economically efficient," said Dr. Olaf Wollersheim, head of the project at KIT. "We are looking for applications in which electric vehicles are cheaper than a reference car with a combustion engine. If the vehicle is used often, costs can be reduced considerably and the high purchasing price is compensated."

Toyota Considers High-Performance Hybrid Version of the GT86

Toyota Considers High-Performance Hybrid Version of the GT86 | AP micro research paper | Scoop.it
Yesterday, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota unveiled the open-top version of its new GT86 sports car. Of course, everyone expects to see this version put into production very soon.
Zach Brown's insight:

Many hybrid cars are not very stylish and they lose a lot of performance. A hybrid GT36 would expand the market and more people would start looking into hybrid and electric cars more.

Who drives electric cars?

Who drives electric cars? | AP micro research paper | Scoop.it
Electric cars may be the future but problems such as "range anxiety" and the high purchase price are keeping them from becoming a more prominent feature on Scotland's roads. (RT @dbeeton: Who drives electric cars in Scotland?
Zach Brown's insight:

This piece brings up a good point about why electric cars generally arent as popular among consumers. The "range anxiety" brought up is a key factor that plays into a consumers decision. It also alks about the Tesla roadster, which in my opinion, is the best choice for an electric car.

Energy Industry Elite Look for Oil In Detroit

Energy Industry Elite Look for Oil In Detroit | AP micro research paper | Scoop.it
A big energy industry conference in Houston is focusing on how much oil could be saved if U.S. auto makers boosted the average fuel efficiency from the current 23 miles a gallon. GM's CEO says it should be plenty.
Zach Brown's insight:

Its interesting how we have to worry less and less about oil running out if we just boost the mpgs on a car. This I can also use in my paper in the part where I talk about the impact felt by car companies.

This day had to come for Hybrid cars

I think that this day just had to come. The thing is that this is only the figures for Toyota, it does not relate to the total number of hybrid cars compared to diesel models. The number of people buying Toyota cars are in my opinion in the upper class better off people, who can afford to buy these highly priced cars in the first place whether they are hybrids or diesels. Toyota cars have a good reputation for reliability here in the UK but I wonder what will happen when it comes to the second market, will people with a limited budget buy these hybrid cars knowing about the expensive battery problems and lack of travelling  distance before a re-charge. Beijing's noxious smog is a reminder of why China needs to step up investments in clean energy.

This is important for the role of government in the electric and hybrid car issue. Although this is about China, this can relate back to the US in the fact that one way the government can motivate big car companies to manufacture more fuel efficient cars is by giving them subsidies.
