Here’s the Chinese passport map that’s infuriating much of Asia - Wash. Post

Here’s the Chinese passport map that’s infuriating much of Asia - Wash. Post | AP Human Geography @ Hermitage High School - Ms. Anthony | Scoop.it
A map on page 8 of the new passport shows disputed territory and islands, not to mention Taiwan, as part of China.
Allison Anthony's insight:

According to several other Asian countries, China included some areas on its new map printed in its passports that don't belong to China.  A marked up image in the article shows the approximate territories in dispute and discusses what the other countries are doing in response to have some of their lands "taken".

"The militant group called the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria seemed to surprise many American and Iraqi officials with the recent gains it made in its violent campaign to create a new religious state. But the victories achieved in the past few weeks were built on months of maneuvering along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which define a region known as the cradle of civilization."

Vietnamese Hipsters Reveal The Power of Internet and Globalization

Vietnamese Hipsters Reveal The Power of Internet and Globalization | AP Human Geography @ Hermitage High School - Ms. Anthony | Scoop.it

"Starbucks and Kentucky Fried Chicken aren't the only American brands entering Vietnam and changing the culture. The short film, "The Day Dreamers" by Vietnamese production team, Bluer Vietnam, showcases Vietnam's own brand of tattooed hipsters hanging out on rooftops, riding fixed gear bikes, skateboarding and fantasizing about crazy ideas. While there is no dialogue, the imagery of these hip Vietnamese youth tells a powerful story about Vietnam's cultural evolution: it strives to look like America."

Allison Anthony's insight:

This is a great story about the globalization and diffusion of popular culture.

This Chart Explains Every Culture In The World

This Chart Explains Every Culture In The World | AP Human Geography @ Hermitage High School - Ms. Anthony | Scoop.it

"On the y-axis, traditional values emphasize the importance of religion, parent-child relationships, and authority, according to the World Values Survey . People who embrace these tend to reject divorce, abortion, euthanasia, and suicide. Oppositely, secular-rational values represent the other extreme and tend to relate to liberal ways of thinking. On the x-axis, survival values revere economic and physical security and safety and are linked to low levels of trust and tolerance. On the other side, self-expression values give high priority to protecting the environment, promoting gender equality, and tolerating foreigners and gays and lesbians."

Allison Anthony's insight:

This is a very interesting way to look at culture and the morals and belief systems across the global spectrum.  Pick a few countries and see if you can guess where they might fall on the chart, the.take a look and see if you if you were right.

The True Cost Of Russia's Food Patriotism

The True Cost Of Russia's Food Patriotism | AP Human Geography @ Hermitage High School - Ms. Anthony | Scoop.it
Allison Anthony's insight:

MOSCOW — People usually associate Russian conservatism with its citizens' political tastes, but marketing professionals have long ago seen another connection — literally, in consumer tastes.

There's the ice cream wrapped in paper — "tastes just like you remember!" And there's sausage with a label saying it was "made according to the standards of the Soviet Union."

Soviet culinary artifacts have been flying off the shelves for years. Valeri Fedorov, director of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center, says it's no surprise that Russians support sanctions on Western food products as evidenced by the abundance of Soviet symbols in stores.

Access to education is one of the great indicators of development and political stability--educators wish nothing but the best education possible for the next generation, but the experience is quite variable across the globe.  As many places have recently started school again, this article is a reminder that this practice is experienced differently around the world.
