Differentiating learning is an essential aspect of good teaching. Having students sit at grade level tables enabled this. They shared, talked, and questioned. There was a barter system of sorts. The artist helped others with art work and was repaid with help in other subjects. "Differences make a difference."

In her celebrated book ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’, Stanford university psychologist Carol S. Dweck makes a strong case backed up with  scientific evidence for the power of mindset in shaping one’s success or failure in almost every facet of our life.Those with a fixed mindset mentality tend to be limited in their learning scope believing that their inner traits and abilities are biologically determined. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset embrace change and tend to learn more from life experiences because for them concepts such as skills, abilities and competencies are not fixated  and can be developed through a process of error and trial.

There is no doubt that the 4 C's are still very important even after they first came out so long ago. However, part of the problem is that we throw students into the deep end of the 4 C's and have never, or may have never, established a school climate that will help deeply support the students before they dive in. We can't do the 4 C's without fostering the important 5th C.

Learning to work in groups in the classroom doesn't come naturally, research shows. Teachers have to lay the groundwork.

 

"...three main aspects of collaboration that need to be taught: communicating with others, resolving conflicts, and managing tasks.

Without a task that requires multiple perspectives, Lai said, students often simply divvy up different aspects of a task "and then sort of smoosh it together at the end. That's not really collaborating."

That's what Emma Mercier, an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, and graduate researcher Susan Kelly, both of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, are also finding in a large, ongoing series of studies of middle school students working in groups.

For one forthcoming study, the researchers assigned groups of students using electronic "smart" tables to answer questions on the nutrition and energy costs of different foods, using different data sources. In the 45 discussions studied, all the students could identify and repeat data facts, but the groups that engaged in more discussion of the data were able to begin to synthesize different sources of information and how they were connected.

Students also talk about the definitions of fixed and growth mindsets and then talk through various challenges from each perspective. When the school year starts, those lessons continue in the classroom. Every teacher in the Health and Medicine Academy has read Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindset,” and has discussed how to implement it in their classrooms. The school has moved to standards-based grading to emphasize that mistakes are part of learning and that understanding will come.

"A just-published study asks about the effect of schooling on the brain. (A chatty, readable summary by one of the authors can be found here.)

More specifically, it looks at a young child’s ability to self-regulate: a skill that early schooling emphasizes–and, of course, one that’s highly necessary for sustained success in almost any meaningful activity or relationship.

The authors take advantage of the arbitrary cut-off date for schooling, and look at brain development for children who were just old enough–or not quite old enough–to enroll in 1st grade.

The research question was: can we find meaningful differences in self-regulatory areas of the brain after a year of 1st grade (children just within the cut-off date) compared to a year of kindergarten (children just beyond the cut-off date)? Did these brains develop alike over the course of this year, as part of typical human development? Or, did the more academic structure of 1st grade influence brains to develop differently than the more playful freedom of kindergarten?"

I love the simple, yet informative, graphic that opens this article for teachers about the 4 phases of Inquiry-Based Learning. We talk a lot about inquiry and how important it is to engage students through questioning but how much attention is given to the teaching professional to make sure s/he knows how to implement a quality program? This is a wonderful article to share with teachers and it's great for librarians, too. Think about how we use these 4 phases every time a patron comes in looking for a book suggestion. You interact to get a feel for who they are, you get clarification about what they're looking for, you engage in the "reference interview" to narrow down  your suggestions, and then you provide a list of suggestions or "design" the reading experience. We've been modeling this for years! Enjoy!

Typically we define oceans and seas based on their borders with land as their most important characteristics.  Also, we rarely look at the bottom of the globe as the center of our global perspective.  Those are a few of the reasons why American students usually have never heard of the Southern Ocean, but Australian students see it as one of the world's main oceans.

How to Ask Purposeful Questions to Engage Your Team

There are four main reasons to ask questions: to understand, assess, innovate and motivate. It is important to understand your objectives before you start asking. Within each objective, your question might focus on the person or the project/process. For example, if you want to understand, most leaders jump directly to questions that help them understand their team's projects and processes by asking:

What's the goal?
What's the plan?
What are your options?
However, excellent leaders start with questions to help understand their people, such as:

In which areas would you like to grow?
What do you love to do?
What do you need to be at your very best?
