Zeroing in on the Effect of Narcissism on Short-Term Mate Appeal," Michael Dufner et al., Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin – in print, July 2013.
William James Ladwig's insight:

Hey ladies I’m full of myself, anyone interested? A study I found shows that when 61 men went out on the street that had symptoms of antisocial personality disorder and some narcissism symptoms they were more successful in acquiring girls contact information. Are the antisocial sexy? Reports say they’ve received mixed answers with other confounding variables involved.  There are many similarities between the two disorders and many people claim they're almost interchangeable.

Psychopathic, borderline, anti-social and narcissistic personality disorders (NPD) are closely associated with abusive/violent behaviour (Calvete, 2008; Logan & Johnstone, 2010).
William James Ladwig's insight:

I found that abusive relationships go hand in hand with antisocial personality disorder. One percent of every person over the age of 18 has the disorder. If 43% of all humans on earth are in some form of relationship, married or not, then 301,000,000 (or a little under a half of one percent) of people are in what could be labeled an abusive relationship. A lot of this abuse comes from symptoms that’ll tingle your toes when you hear how similar they are to antisocial personality disorder. With their ego taking over their personality, the abusers often lie to get their ways. They strike or emotionally assault at any opportunity they may get because they have a hidden unstable emotion or feeling inside. Freud could really help with that, help your mom ohhh! Abuse Recovery and Relationships expert, author and radio host, Tania Melanie Evans claims it is a worldwide epidemic.

h2g2, the Unconventional Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything
William James Ladwig's insight:

Antisocial personality disorders have even been featured in award winning movies. In A Clockwork Orange, the main character Alex is diagnosed with the disorder. He has no remorse or regret for his unlawful and immoral decisions. He and his gang bet up a homeless guy because he’s annoying, and that’s there justification. Alex is a compulsive liar and a thief. He undergoes therapy for the disorder more or less like light exposure therapy and they find it doesn’t work in the slightest. The winner of an Oscar from beyond the grave also used this disorder to help him portray the Joker in The Dark Knight. Even R.P. McMurphy from your favorite movie ever, OFOTCN showed signs of the disorder.

Signs of antisocial personality disorder - by Dr Pandula Siribaddana - Helium

In modern day, we encounter many instances where people behave against the rule of law and disregard many of the other social norms.
William James Ladwig's insight:

There are many signs of antisocial personality disorders, but they may sometimes be unclear. Often they may abuse children or people who are weaker or vulnerable. They intimidate people and lie to get there ways. Most often the people with this disorder act on impulse which can lead to negative behavior and poor choices.Having poor relationships is just a result of the symptoms for the disorder. However, 37% of the psychologists surveyed show at least one syptom of the disorder, so it becomes a sticky situation with diagnosis. How can we determine if someone has the disorder? How do we understand how extreme the case is? How can we prevent any extremely negative or violent behavior? These are questions psychologists have tried to answer.

William James Ladwig's insight:

To quote the famous movie Team America World Police, “America, BLEEP YEAH!” the U.S. government uses psychology even in war. It helps them to understand why terrorists have the ability to do what they do, and why North Korea is, “So Ronery.” They also must be careful in the policies and ideas of defense tactics because the things they concoct may actually be just as bad. The strategies that neutralize the objective of having empathy towards others may be the one most described as sociopathic. It demonstrates a lack of conscience for the value of innocent life overseas and is another massive moral stain on the politicians who lord over the Land of the Free.

William James Ladwig's insight:

If you ever plan on beating a police officer to death with firewood, than antisocial personality disorder may be the right approach. A man in Oregon got an early release from his sentence because he was diagnosed with the disorder. He is going to get to go and live with some relatives of his in a stable area.

Factors that can contribute to antisocial personality disorder - by Dean Traylor - Helium

Factors that can contribute to antisocial personality disorder - by Dean Traylor - Helium | Antisocial Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
Some researchers say it’s in the brain; others suggest it’s in the environment.
William James Ladwig's insight:

The signs and symptoms of antisocial personality disorder do not just appear out of nowhere, for no rhyme or reason. They are caused by several factors that are being heavily researched. No one factor is to blame though, and it’s a classic nature versus nurture argument. If you were to blame biology the first item on the chopping block would be the brain. The amygdala has been proven to be smaller in people with ASPD. They also respond less robustly to others when making facial expressions. It is also believed that people with other severe disorders may be at greater risk. The environmentalist believers would say that things like family, how accessible substances are, friends, or social/cultural factors are influential in creating this condition. If someone were raised in a neglectful household, studies suggest that people will have more trouble empathizing with others and are therefore at greater risk. Antisocial personality disorder doesn’t have one specific cause or causes but instead many factors that contribute to it’s creation.
