"Well, I'm Glad I'm White"

"Well, I'm Glad I'm White" | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

This is why I do the work I do:

"What if this little cherub didn't have the upbringing and education to check that automatic response? How easy would it be, even subconsciously, for "I'm glad I'm white" to gradually morph into "It's better that I'm white" and eventually to "I'm better because I'm white" if there wasn't a strong message to counter that?"

Yes, black males are different, but different is not deficient

"To address the chief issues surrounding low achievement of black males in schools one must acknowledge the inability of education systems to accept that there are ways of looking at the world, communication modes, and approaches to teaching that are unique to black males. The author developed five tools for teaching black males: Cogenerative dialogues, coteaching, cosmopolitanism, context, and content...."

Five Things White Activists Should Never Say

Five Things White Activists Should Never Say | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

If I’m to be a white ally, I figure I should take some of the burden off people of color to explain what’s wrong with some of the things white people say. With that in mind I’ve decided to compile a list of things that white people — specifically, white activists — should never say.

"...the finger point in the face is not a gesture between equals.

“Dang, Black folks got too many rules! It’s so hard to keep up with y’all!” That’s true. I won’t deny it. So many rules, even I have a hard time keeping up.

After she pointed her finger in President Obama’s face she followed up in a media interview by saying she “felt threatened” by him.

This flipped racial script of Governor Brewer is very old, and has several versions, but it has proven useful throughout the years for the shell game of White supremacy, as when a Black man was lynched whenever a White woman accused him of looking at her funny.

I’m not playing here mentioning the funny look. It was the unofficial law of “reckless eyeballing” created by White southerners, and many a southern Black man swung at the end of a rope for committing that supposed crime. The case of Emmitt Till was a variation of “reckless eyeballing,” because he whistled at a White woman and ended up murdered."

BEING A MAID

"Last night, President Obama, our first African American President, delivered his third State of the Union address. On that same day, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated two gifted African American actresses, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, for Oscars for playing maids in The Help. This is 73 years after the first African American to win an Oscar, Hattie McDaniel, garnered the award for the same role – as a maid, and a slave maid at that, winning the Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category on Feb. 29, 1940."
