Things White Activists Say to Activists of Color [Saturday #Culture] | People Of Color Organize! | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

“In our safe spaces, we have every right to feel welcomed and not tokenized, harassed or ignored. We ask for you to listen to us when we speak about racism because we are being effected by it daily. This video is a compilation of things actually said to POC involved in activism and social justice.”

RACE Are We So Different?

Looking through the eyes of history, science and lived experience, the RACE Project explains differences among people and reveals the reality – and unreality – of race. The story of race is complex and may challenge how we think about race and human variation, about the differences and similarities among people.

BYU Black Face and the Meaning of Race in America

BYU Black Face and the Meaning of Race in America | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

"This previously posted video underscores a major concern in the profound lack of understanding about race in America. It appears as though many of the students that comedian David Ackerman interviews know very little about the significance of the month of February, and furthermore, very little about the black experience in general."

Unlearning Sexism and Other Oppressions

Unlearning Sexism and Other Oppressions | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

Due to the dangerous intersections of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and other positionalities, it is important to stress on being conscious of these interlocking oppressions.  The term “intersectionality” is invoked a lot, but there is a huge difference between writing about it and understanding it.

The Unexpressed Anger of Black Men In America

The Unexpressed Anger of Black Men In America | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

"The "white Tea baggers" can get angry but not Black men (especially if you are a Black Panther). Rush, Hannity, Beck, and Bill O'Reilly, in fact, are allowed to come on television every night professing their anger but as Black men, we are told to suppress our anger and pretend like nothing is wrong."

I Shall Not Be Conformed -Starlette McNeill

I Shall Not Be Conformed -Starlette McNeill | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

"It’s not about race; that’s the scapegoat. This is about how we treat one another and there’s no one to blame but us.

We draw the lines and then cross them.

We provide the rations of privilege and train our children for combat.

We strategize and plan and attack each other. Crying, “peace, peace” when that’s not what we really want.

We want war because we want sides– our side of the story to be prominent, our piece of the pie to be largest."

Do you at least have a Bentley? And other cries for help from the Permanent Underclass

Do you at least have a Bentley? And other cries for help from the Permanent Underclass | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

"As I have done many times before, I traveled to a school to talk to kids about my work and much of it includes introducing the people on the bottom to that middle level called financial stability. While many teach similar concepts they are mostly aimed at the middle class that aspire to be either wealthy or to never experience financial strain again in their lifetime. Both concepts are so unrealistic that they are laughable."

"Being asked to describe what “post-racial” means is a bit like being asked to describe a leprechaun, cold fusion or unicorns: we know what is meant, but, if we are willing to be honest, we also know that none of the four describe something real, something tangible, something true."

Tim Wise » Flying Below Radar: Race, Privilege and the Evidence of Things Not Felt

"No matter how much money I might have, what size home, what kind of job, what beautiful and perfectly functional family, or my level of education, were I a black man in that situation (or a Latino in this era of generalized suspicion towards brown folks as de facto undocumented) everything would have been different, from my heart rate to the anxiety-related activity in my amygdala to the tightening of my muscles to the lump in my throat."

Complicating “White Privilege”

Complicating “White Privilege” | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

"In my favorite photograph of my Grandma Wilma, taken during her early teens, she stands outside her Kitzmiller, Maryland, house. The house’s exterior, cracking and worn, hints at the working poor life she and her family are living in Appalachia. Evidence, too, is her attire: full-length overalls, dusty and stained, hang over a plain white t-shirt."
