New research indicates that by the time they are 9 months old, babies are better able to recognize faces and emotional expressions of people who belong to the group they interact with most, than they are those of people who belong to another race.

GA Neighbors Who Pulled Guns On Black Homeowner Arrested. Gunmen's defense? 2nd Amendment.

GA Neighbors Who Pulled Guns On Black Homeowner Arrested. Gunmen's defense? 2nd Amendment. | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

You may remember this story about Jean Kalonji and his wife Angelica, the purchaser of a foreclosed home in Newton County GA. While changing the locks on their new home, they were threatened and held at gunpoint by two of their white neighbors. When the local sheriff deputies arrived they arrested the Kalonjis without checking to find out if they were the homeowners, and took no action against the men who threatened and assaulted Jean and Angelica with their firearms and held them against their will for no apparent reason other than that 61 year-old Jean Kalonji was black.

White Guilt - White People

White Guilt - White People | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

No one ever asked white people to feel guilt. What we asked for was to be treated with equality. What we received was decades of Jim Crow laws that lasted well into the 20th century. The civil rights movement isn’t ancient history and racism and racial prejudice is alive and thriving in the 21st century.

The Problem with the 'Some of My Best Friends Are Black' Defense

The Problem with the 'Some of My Best Friends Are Black' Defense | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it
But there’s a problem with this defense: the scholarship on racial perception clearly proves that even the most diverse group of friends doesn’t make one immune to race-based prejudice, whether it is conscious or unconscious.

A Reflection on Being a White Anti-Racist and a Call to Do It Anyway

A Reflection on Being a White Anti-Racist and a Call to Do It Anyway | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

As a white anti-racist I’m very consciously reminded in moments like this that I, too, am a problem. I am not who DuBois had in mind when he posed the agonizing question, “How does it feel to be a problem?” Yet I ache under a weight of suspicion as I reflect on what the barometer reveals about the path I’ve chosen for my life.

I AM NOT TRAYVON MARTIN

I AM NOT TRAYVON MARTIN....
I AM NOT TROY DAVIS....

and to the middle class, white, socially concerned activist who wears a shirt emblazoned with those slogans, you are wrong.

I know you wear that shirt to stand in solidarity with Trayvon, Troy, and other victims of injustice. The purpose of those shirts is to humanize these victims of our society, by likening them to the middle class white activist wearing it. And once we've humanized the victims, this proves to us the arbitrariness of their deaths and thereby the injustice at play.

But the fact of the matter is that these men's deaths are anything but arbitrary.

White Man Says “When Will We Get Over It?”

White Man Says “When Will We Get Over It?” | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it
For much of the last forty years, ever since America “fixed” its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, “When are African Americans finally going to get over it?

Now I want to ask: “When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color? [via @chocl8girl]

In Arizona, Censoring Questions About Race

In Arizona, Censoring Questions About Race | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

In recent weeks, the state of Arizona has intensified its attack in its schools on an entire branch of study — critical race theory. Books and literature that, in the state’s view, meet that definition have been said to violate a provision in the state’s law that prohibits lessons “promoting racial resentment.”

Studies of Unconscious Bias Suggest Racism Not Necessarily Perpetrated by Racists

Studies of Unconscious Bias Suggest Racism Not Necessarily Perpetrated by Racists | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

According to Williams, the research shows that when people hold a negative stereotype about a group and meet someone from that group, they often treat that person differently and honestly don't even realize it. Williams noted that most Americans would object to being labeled as “racist” or even as “discriminating”, but he added, “Welcome to the human race. It is a normal process about how all of us process information. The problem for our society is that the level of negative stereotypes is very high.”

A National Conversation on Race Requires Constant Discussion

A National Conversation on Race Requires Constant Discussion | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

It happens after every major news story involving race, and we fail miserably as a nation every time. We now find ourselves asking questions about the lives of young black men -- including the lessons that black parents hand down to their sons about how to move in the world that finds them suspicious -- and, to a lesser degree, about the perceptions we all hold of black men. While that may sound as if we're on the right track, given how much experience we have already had with unarmed black men being gunned down for no reason, it raises the question: Why don't we know the answers yet?
