The very white poetry of 'Mad Men'

The very white poetry of 'Mad Men' | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

For a black person like me, born and raised in what television would call “the ghetto,” it isn’t about good or bad. It’s about comfort zones. In early childhood, television taught me to see “white” as simply the default for “human.” Mister Rogers wasn’t a “white man,” but just a friendly neighbor with some weird friends. Ralph Kramden’s delusional dreams and schemes had no color.

This speech defined Civil Rights as a moral issue and laid the groundwork for the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Earlier in the day, Kennedy had mobilized National Guard troops to escort Vivian Jones and James Hood as they registered at the University of Alabama, the last state university to integrate.

My Lesson From College: Hard Work and Privilege Aren't Mutually Exclusive

My Lesson From College: Hard Work and Privilege Aren't Mutually Exclusive | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it
I graduated from college last Sunday, and on the ride home later that day (mind you, for a quick visit, not an indefinite stay), my parents asked me: "What was the most important thing you learned about in college?" My answer: privilege, how I have it and my responsibility to address it.

The Good White People: A Quick Tip on Countering Interpersonal Racism | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

All of this was made possible by first accepting that everyone can change, and then looking for soft entry points. Because all organizing is ultimately about giving people the opportunity to claim acknowledgement, respect, and dignity, appealing to white people’s sense that violent racists defamed them got folks organized. ]via @JohnnyGolightly]

White Mind (Part II)

White Mind (Part II) | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

Part I defined White Mind as the unconscious patterns of thought and behavior resulting from socialization as a white American, and one of the causes for the low representation of people of color in all aspects of the children’s book field today.

Part II offers ways to make White Mind conscious and change resulting behaviors. (I directly address white readers here, though I hope it’s provocative for all.)

FACE TO FACE

FACE TO FACE | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it
If “blackface” is one of the heights of racist dehumanization of Blacks then I would wager that “whiteface” does not fall too far behind. Much of this essay will key in on media images as they relate to Black life, and celebrities are overt representations of Blackness. Nicki Minaj, Vybz Kartel, and Beyonce are just a few of the people who perform in “whiteface.”

Wise As An Owl

Wise As An Owl | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

Since whites in AmeriKlan…

SIMPLY.

CANNOT.

HEAR.

ANYTHING.

Bad about themselves from a black person, God made Tim Wise. If you don’t know Tim J. Wise, let me tell you a few things about this fellow:

He’s a white anti-racist scholar. He’s a southerner. He’s an author and an orator that speaks about whiteness and its supremacist machinations in AmeriKlan. He’s trained companies and law enforcement officials on how to undo racial practices in the workforce( which we blacks know only teaches them how to be MORE racist and get away with it ). And he’s esteemed, well-spoken, highly educated and thought to be “One of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation.”

How to Be a Racial Justice Hero

How to Be a Racial Justice Hero | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

Racial Transformers don’t fixate on who’s a racist or whether someone intends animus. For they know that the deepest racism lies not just in the hearts and minds of individuals, but in the roles and rules of big institutions—like schools, courtrooms and corporations. That’s their primary focus of change—these familiar systems of power, churning out deep and deadly racial inequities by the day.

The Emotional Tug of Obama

The Emotional Tug of Obama | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

"David Axelrod, one of the chief architects of Obama’s political career, told Calmes: “It doesn’t take a big leap to think that child could be thinking, ‘Maybe I could be here someday.’ This can be such a cynical business, and then there are moments like that that just remind you that it’s worth it.”

Axelrod’s words, meanwhile, are a reminder that more than three and a half years after Obama made history as the first black man elected to the presidency, he still presents more than a résumé and an agenda. He still personifies the hope, to borrow a noun that he has used, that we really might evolve into the colorblind, fair-minded country that many of us want. His own saga taps into the larger story of this country’s fitful, unfinished progress toward its stated ideal of equal opportunity."

Some time ago, I met a black person who informed me that I, William Cerf, a white man would be treated with more dignity and respect that any black person. I believe that my motivation for activism to fight the structures of injustice is grounded in my personal experience of subjugation as well as bearing witness to the suffering of others. Let me now tell you about my introduction to Jim Crow.

The five walls of racism

The five walls of racism | AntiRacism & Privilege | Scoop.it

Can White Americans be unracist? Yes, but it way harder than most of them think. That is why when they quickly say stuff like, “I am not racist” or “I do not see colour”, it is a good sign that the opposite is true. Those who have honestly fought against their own racism do not talk like that.
