Queen Victoria's stockings up for auction

Queen Victoria's stockings up for auction | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Dating from the 1870s, the historical hosiery comes embroidered with the royal VR monogram and will be auctioned off by Tennant’s Auction House in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on Friday (April 26).

Social history author Dulcie Lewis, from Carperby, near Leyburn, has written a book on the history of women’s undergarments, entitled Casting Off The Corsets: A Brief History of Underwear.

She said Queen Victoria’s under garments do occasionally come up for sale as she would strangely  give away her underwear as presents to people who worked for her.

If you like the thrill of an auction......you'll love this one!

Directed by Finn Andersson
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:
A Chinese Ming Vase is up for auction. The bidding opens at a half-million Euro. Bidding is brisk and each bidder is clearly identified as each raises the bid by 100,000 Euro. (The exchange rate at auction time was 1 Euro = $1.43.) Within seconds, the bidding stalls at one million Euros, and the gasp from the crowd identifies the excitement that prevails in the room. The successful bidder is the last one who bid one million, and the auctioneer counts down the bid, "Going once, going twice, and sold to the gentleman sitting in front of me for one million Euros."  Now, you are going to have to see the video for yourself. The auctioneer is exuberant. The pace is fast. This is how an auction should be run. Note the excitement on the auctioneer's face after the final bid.

Antique Auction Houses Buck The Economic Trend

Antique Auction Houses Buck The Economic Trend | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Latest figures show that most provincial auction houses have done rather well during 2011. Why?

People like to collect things, and antiques are a favourite collectable. It's nice to own a piece of history that you can use; something you can sit on, serve dinner on, store items inside of, or look at in appreciation.

The value of an antique is realised by the collector who owns it as well as the collector who wishes to own it and that is evidenced by the sterling performance of antique auction houses during 2011, when low interest rates, record gold and silver prices and collectors looking to liquidate assets produced record sales results.

For instance; the highest price paid in the UK in 2011 was the 1.75m pound bid for an Imperial Qing dynasty white jade teapot and cover at Woolley & Wallis.

In the USA in December 2011, the unique Brasher Doubloon, known as the 1st American Dollar Gold Coin, was sold by Steven L. Contursi. It was bought by Blanchard and Company of New Orleans for around 3 million dollars, who then sold it to a Wall Street investment firm for nearly 7.4 million dollars.

For most antique buyers and sellers these are numbers we can only dream of; but It will always stand you in good stead if you take the time to understand how to buy and sell your more modest collectibles and antiques at auction.

The estate of the late Earlene S. Bowen — “the Antiques Lady” — will be sold on-site without reserve

The estate of the late Earlene S. Bowen — “the Antiques Lady” — will be sold on-site without reserve | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

In 1957, with $10,000 and a dream to get into the business, Earlean launched Bowen’s Antiques, initially as a home-based venture. Parlaying her love of Empire pieces, old Southern furniture, primitives, Americana, china, crystal and jewelry into a bulging inventory, Ms. Bowen had, by age 85, amassed an inventory worth about $1 million. And she was just hitting her stride.

“At an age when most people are well into retirement and taking life easy, Ms. Bowen was out there, charging around the country, buying new pieces and making new contacts,” Dwight Stevens said. “At age 90 she had a six-man crew and several trucks. She was just this unbelievable powerhouse of energy. People in many states knew her as ‘the Antiques Lady.’”
