I confess. I'm a THING person - a collector, a gatherer of objects. If it gathers dust, I'm all over it (although not with a dustcloth). Don't get the wrong idea: I'm not Miss Havisham, huddled in my lair as my belongings crumble to dust around me.

Art Deco Artists and Art Deco Designers

Art Deco Artists and Art Deco Designers | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Art Deco Artists - A reference of artists and architectural and decorative arts designers that typify the art deco style... from Andre Leon Arbus to Rene Lalique, Frank Lloyd Wright and Joseph Hoffman.

Art Deco epitomises style and sophistication and some of the 20th century's most significant artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Sonia Delaunay and Wassily Kandinsky, produced work in the art deco style, as did many designers of furnishings, textiles, jewellery, and advertising.

Favourites include Charles-Eduard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier), who as a decorator became well known in the Parisian art world, and worked with other great designers such as Andre Groult and Paul Poiret.

Frank Lloyd Wright is another excellent art deco designer. He was instrumental in fashioning a specifically American tradition of modern decoration upon which American Art Deco was built.

If you love Art Deco here are the artists and designers you want to collect ...

Antique Auction Houses Buck The Economic Trend

Antique Auction Houses Buck The Economic Trend | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Latest figures show that most provincial auction houses have done rather well during 2011. Why?

People like to collect things, and antiques are a favourite collectable. It's nice to own a piece of history that you can use; something you can sit on, serve dinner on, store items inside of, or look at in appreciation.

The value of an antique is realised by the collector who owns it as well as the collector who wishes to own it and that is evidenced by the sterling performance of antique auction houses during 2011, when low interest rates, record gold and silver prices and collectors looking to liquidate assets produced record sales results.

For instance; the highest price paid in the UK in 2011 was the 1.75m pound bid for an Imperial Qing dynasty white jade teapot and cover at Woolley & Wallis.

In the USA in December 2011, the unique Brasher Doubloon, known as the 1st American Dollar Gold Coin, was sold by Steven L. Contursi. It was bought by Blanchard and Company of New Orleans for around 3 million dollars, who then sold it to a Wall Street investment firm for nearly 7.4 million dollars.

For most antique buyers and sellers these are numbers we can only dream of; but It will always stand you in good stead if you take the time to understand how to buy and sell your more modest collectibles and antiques at auction.

I’ve not yet been to London, or any other place across The Pond, but when I read this story of spies and lingerie–

Hold on a minute! Did I just say “spies and lingerie”?!

Yes; yes I did.

Former spy and first female Director General of MI5, Dame Stella Rimington (who went on to author spy novels), has just helped to open a huge historical archive for major UK retailer Marks & Spencer.

Old items a new way of learning

Old items a new way of learning | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

It might seem that those people who drag their family heirlooms or garage sale "finds" from the basement to one of those antique appraisal shows are mainly looking to score a get-rich-quick payoff, hoping that their pieces are some sort of rare items of immense value to collectors. Or at the very least, that the items are worth enough to pull in some pocket cash by putting them up on eBay.

Not so, said Mark Moran, an antiques expert for more than 30 years.

Finding a 42-foot-long snake (fossil) - Boing Boing | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

This giant serpent looked something like a modern-day boa constrictor, but behaved more like today’s water-dwelling anaconda. It was a swamp denizen and a fearsome predator, able to eat any animal that caught its eye. The thickest part of its body would be nearly as high as a man’s waist. Scientists call it Titanoboa cerrejonensis.

Coin-grading firm helped bring order to a free-for-all industry

Coin-grading firm helped bring order to a free-for-all industry | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

As rare coins began to appreciate in value in the late 1970s and early '80s, collectors say, their hobby evolved into an investment opportunity. Even then, coins were assigned grades based on their condition on the same 70-point scale, but as the stakes rose, scams spread. Many dealers gave coins higher grades than they merited so they could sell the coins for more than their worth.

Busy Hands from the 1950s – Making TV and Radio Scarfs - Blog - CollectorsQuest.com | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

I found this delightful little pamphlet at an antique store and thought it was a hoot! I wondered what the grandkids would say if they called to see what I was doing and my response was “making a television scarf.” They probably would ask to talk to Papa right away, just to see if I was “off my meds.”

Book Me I’m an Addict : Collector Books For Your Information - Blog - CollectorsQuest.com | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

I’m addicted to collector books. Our library of these books has well over one hundred different copies–some purchased early on and proved to be too broad and not deep into any one subject. I soon learned the value in spending money on great books. By now, many are well worn to the point of having loose covers, and several have been replaced with more updated versions. Most of these books have price guides, but with an ever-changing market, I only use the prices as a loose reference, adjusted for current trends in collecting and the economy.
