The Man Who Thought Like a Ship : Past Horizons Archaeology

The Man Who Thought Like a Ship : Past Horizons Archaeology | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

The letters nagged at me like a persistent hint from the past. I’d first encountered them among my father’s papers as I researched my book, The Man Who Thought Like a Ship. They pertained to a ship model he’d built in the 1950s of an ancient Egyptian vessel. The model left home before I was born, and everyone, my father included, assumed it had been discarded long ago. I’d only ever seen it in pictures.

“Hello, Cutie!” The Interview

“Hello, Cutie!” The Interview | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago, I had the great pleasure of reviewing a new release which explores the collectible culture of “cute”. …And maybe exploits the rise of cute in contemporary culture. But in a good way — I swear. Entitled Hello, Cutie!: Adventures in Cute Culture, the book was not only charming but so engaging that I just had to interview its author, Pamela Klaffke.

Vintage USS Constellation Lighter | Inherited Values | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

It’s a great piece in terms of history; and in collecting, it’s a reminder of how wartime knock-offs are often nearly as valuable as the originals. If the knock-off was the lighter held back in the day, it’s the lighter you want today. And tips on vintage Zippo “Town and Country” lighters.

Can You Really Own That? : Emmy (and Other) Awards | Collectors' Blog

Can You Really Own That? : Emmy (and Other) Awards | Collectors' Blog | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

"Here at Collectors Quest, we’ve already discussed how countries are now legally pursuing artifacts that belong to their nation’s history, often winning their court cases even when the objects sat in museums. And hubby and I have shared our story of vintage 20th Century Fox Film Studio ephemera, regaling how our legal purchase garnered us an item which was once stolen. (It turned out well for us; but it doesn’t always work out that way.) But there’s another category of troublesome collecting surrounding those items with legal contractual right issues.

These contractual rights, if ignored, differ from outright theft; but it still means that the new owner has obtained the object illegally. The result is that a collector will likely be court ordered to return the item — often with no compensation (other than, if they can afford it, the option of suing the person or party they purchased the forbidden item from). So this legalese is important to know.."

Curation At Work: The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection

Curation At Work: The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Robin Good: The David Ramsey Map Collection is an historical collection of thousands of beautiful maps and atlases organized and made freely accessible to the public online in unique and unprecedented ways.

This is a stunning example of a visual curated collection, offering thousands of beautiful images at very high quality, and multiple ways and tools to navigate this ocean of maps.

This online collection offers in fact no less than 12 different ways to navigate its contents by providing dedicated browsers and visual imaging tools ranging from 2D-GIS to SecondLife and virtual QTR panoramas. For example, with the Google Earth visualization, any map in the collection can be seen perfectly mapped on the globe, or by using the Luna Browser one can create collections, save and download images, annotate maps or even create embeddable presentations.

All of the images in the collection have been published online at full resolution and are available to download at different quality levels under a Creative Commons License for non-commercial uses.

This is truly a spectacular collection with marvellous maps and atlases enriched by complementary data, visualization tools and a formidable array of navigation devices.

Possibly the best online curated collection I have seen so far.

Must-see. 10/10
