Record Labels, Back Beats And Background Stories (Part II) - The Mod Generation

Record Labels, Back Beats And Background Stories (Part II) - The Mod Generation | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it
Stepping into the 60’s soul and R&B genre we’ll start by looking at snap shots from the background of one or two of the founders and artists such as Motown’s Berry Gordy Jnr. and the singer and original ‘Mr. Excitement’ himself Jackie Wilson. Both were former professional boxers where no doubt the discipline of boxing and being confident in a tight spot came in handy. Gordy was a perfectionist through and through and sometimes doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for founding, running, and succeeding under such difficult circumstances.

DIY Tea Tin Herbs

DIY Tea Tin Herbs | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

I love cooking for family and friends, and as all the pros will tell you, food always tastes more flavourful when it's made with fresh herbs. This quick, kid-friendly project lets you get a head start growing an herb garden before summer comes and will afford the luxury of fresh ingredients year-round. And after a long winter, I'm starved for spring greenery, and these pretty tea tins, brimming with plant life, add welcome colour to a windowsill or kitchen shelf.

A great idea of recycling tins; even vintage rusted ones (in condidtions too bad to be desireable collectibles) can be used to add good taste and charm to your home.

Bek Atkins's curator insight, March 7, 2013 6:52 AM

This is an easy project that students of all abilities can achieve. This activity would develop skills in line with statements in the Australian National Curriculum: science - biological science for years F- 2. [(ACSSU002), (ACSSU017), (ACSSU211) and (ACSSU030).] These statements call for students to observe the biological processes of a variety of different organisms. The positive point for using plants is that if they are roughly treated or neglected the consequences are less traumatic then if it was a guinea pig.

This activity would also translate to Home Economics where students could use their herbs to create nutritional meals. Special needs students (and in fact all young children) can be very picky about their food, especially if it is green! By growing, nurturing and then using their own produce, students have ownership and this may make students more likely to try and like the foods.

Through the teaching of Home Economics skills students can begin to acquire the necessary life skills to become independent.

Vintage Brown Stoneware Bowls

Vintage Brown Stoneware Bowls | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Perhaps even more exciting for collectors is the fact that while these bowls are not marked “Red Wing”, they were in fact made by Minnesota’s own Red Wing Stoneware Company. (Red Wing collectors will note that these bowls are specifically mentioned in collectors’ guides.) As such, they are very fine examples of pottery and the rich brown yet imperfect glaze with exposed stoneware on the thick shoulders of the rims makes them quite popular with today’s trend in primitive or rustic country home decor looks.

No room for archaeology archive in 27% of museums

No room for archaeology archive in 27% of museums | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

A survey by the Society of Museum Archaeologists (SMA) has exposed a lack of storage space and curatorial expertise in English museums dealing with archaeological archives.

The survey of 134 museums found that 36 could not accept archaeological archives because of lack of space.

It also revealed that museums in 47 local authorities were no longer collecting, while 70% of museums had no specialist archaeology curator.

SMA chairwoman Gail Boyle said: “Many of the museums that responded are local authority museums that have no statutory funding, so they are often targeted [for cuts]. It has become prevalent over time and is getting worse.

“Archaeological field units are having to store their work, as there is nowhere for them to deposit it.

Sad, but not a surprise. I've watched 'Museum Secrets' and see them pull stuff out of storage bins and talk about things found, again.

Without the archives, what value are the 'finds' to which they are linked?  Very sad.

Hot On The Historical Ephemera Trail... In The National Enquirer?

Hot On The Historical Ephemera Trail... In The National Enquirer? | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

The women born between 1905 and 1909 were the same young girls who grew up during the years of the women’s suffrage movement in the US. They would have seen the struggle, heard the talk, and knew they could have greater freedom of choice in living their lives. They too would see, if not quite be, part of the flapper movement. Activism and parenting being almost completely at odds with one another, some may have opted not to have children — and at this time, birth control, thanks to Margaret Sanger, was becoming a realistic option.

And, just as these young women were perhaps thinking of starting a family…

Along comes The Great Depression — the one of that started about 1929, not the one some say we are approaching now — and the birthrate fell about one-tenth globally from the rate during the “prosperous” 1920′s. In America, the birth rate dropped below the replacement level for the first time in history.

Collecting Print Blocks

Collecting Print Blocks | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

The use of printing blocks in newspapers and other printed advertising resulted in vast quantities of these blocks being produced. Examples of the same logo were often replicated in several sizes depending on the usage. Larger sizes for newspaper or magazine ads, with full, half or quarter page ads requiring different size print blocks. Even smaller versions were needed for letterheads, business cards or company envelopes.  These are now a relic of the very recent past, and quite collectible.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Recognize any of the old logos -- even backwards? ;)
