Original 1885 Chesapeake Lighthouse Photographs Mounted Albumen Prints

Original 1885 Chesapeake Lighthouse Photographs Mounted Albumen Prints | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Looking for some assistance in pricing and marketing a set of 9 mounted albumen prints of Chesapeake Bay lighthouses.

Prints are part of a series of photos taken by Major Jared A. Smith for the US Lighthouse Establishment in 1885. Research has shown that the USCG Historian's Dept has copies of some of these prints but for other locations the reference shows "Photo Unavailable".

I Bought it "Ratty" and Left It Alone

I Bought it "Ratty" and Left It Alone | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Not all dealers where happy with my championing of “Buy It Ratty and Leave It Alone.” I had recently been director of The Rhode Island Historical Society and curator of American decorative arts at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. When I lectured to Providence audiences I stressed the importance of condition, form, and surfaces, and before long a local dealer took me to task for diminishing the number of customers who had previously been happy to purchase refinished furniture. He changed his words, however, when he realized he could put an object with a good early surface directly into his showrooms, without the labor of cleaning off the paint, and charge more because it was “untouched.”

Rick Kahler: Collectibles Aren't Wise Retirement Investments | Financial Awakenings

Rick Kahler: Collectibles Aren't Wise Retirement Investments | Financial Awakenings | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Almost everyone has a story about a cousin or an aunt who bought a box of junk at an auction and found in it a diamond ring worth several hundred dollars. Every once in a while a valuable painting by a famous artist turns up in someone’s attic. “Antiques Roadshow” sometimes features odd items that have been sitting around in someone’s house for years and that are appraised for thousands of dollars.

This doesn’t mean buying and selling art or collectibles is a good way to make money.

Buying art, antiques, or collectibles is extremely speculative, in part because values are so subjective. What a given item is worth depends entirely on what a collector might be willing to pay at any given time. A piece of pottery or jewelry might fluctuate considerably in value as trends come and go. Yesterday’s hot collectible (think Beanie Babies or Jim Beam bottles) might be tomorrow’s overpriced embarrassment.

Does this mean you should never buy art or antiques in hopes that they’ll increase in value? Not necessarily. I am suggesting, though, that investment shouldn’t be the primary reason for your purchase.

Friday's WHY IN DESIGN: how to incorporate antiques into your modern home

Friday's WHY IN DESIGN: how to incorporate antiques into your modern home | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it
What do I collect?
And, how can you collect and incorporate antiques into a modern aesthetic?
I love anything for tabletop - like plates, sugar and bowl sets, tea sets and vintage cutlery, salt cellars (a fancy word for salt dishes) or glass ware.  Because many of these items were made beautifully and some by hand, the antique tabletop accessories tend to be high quality and durable.  I also enjoy collecting chairs (because you can never have enough chairs and especially when entertaining -- there's always a need to pull up extras), antique prints and botanical, outdoor furniture/ornamentation and lighting.
Let's focus on how to incorporate items that may be over one hundred years old into our modern day interior design in a way that highlights the pieces but with a fresh perspective.

5 tips on what to look for & how to incorporate antiques into your home decor

Catalog collectibles as a first step to safekeeping

Catalog collectibles as a first step to safekeeping | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

An important rule in collecting is "know what you have." Taking the steps to catalog collectibles can save you time, money and frustration.

...What I want to cover is how to document your collections so that you can insure them against loss. In the process, your documentation will also help to establish provenance and value when the day comes that your collection changes hands. Of course, when you do buy insurance, the agent’s first question to you will be: “What do you have?” So let’s get right down to the business of identifying and cataloging “what you have” in the way of collectibles. Along the way, you may want to decide to inventory the rest of your household goods, as well. It can’t hurt.

Everyone knows that the kitchen is the hub of the home. So when the wildly successful “Downton Abbey’’ series scampered across our television and computer screens earlier this year, the show’s Edwardian kitchen became a visual primer on class and comfort in our increasingly uncertain times.

...[T]he “Downton Abbey” magic continues to seed interest in a broad swath of antique kitchen utensils and artifacts, from Bennington mixing bowls to turn-of-the-century tiger wood rolling pins.

Treasure Hunting for Michigan-themed Antiques

Treasure Hunting for Michigan-themed Antiques | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Despite repeated requests from family and friends to join in the adventure, it’s something I (selfishly) prefer to do solo. I like going at my own pace, without worrying about a guest who is bored 10 minutes into the day, and getting lost in the nostalgia of it all.

While I rarely have something specific I’m looking for, I always seem to find “just the right thing” to add to my collection. Items featuring Michigan receive top attention of course – especially travel brochures and magazines, food and agriculture focused pieces, unique license plates and slightly-rusted signs. I’m also drawn to cottage- and beach-themed décor, garden art and things that are red (the primary accent color in my home).

This past April, a couple treasures found their way into my heart (and ultimately into my bag). A wooden dachshund with “Frankenmuth Beer” in faded paint was a steal at just $5 (even with its chipped tail – which to me, adds to its character). I also scored 5 juice-size glasses adorned with red roosters – perfect for sampling my favorite made-in-Michigan spirits – for $7.

Boedi’s passion is driven by the pleasure of owning beautiful artworks and his motivation to preserve history. Profit making is not on his agenda.

Vanes a barometer of history, culture

Vanes a barometer of history, culture | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Whether they were sailing, fighting, or farming, people have always needed to know which way the wind blows.

But weather vanes have been used for far more than just a forecast.

A vane on a house or barn might show what business you were in, whether you lived in the country or along the seacoast, or simply what took your fancy. Great paths to self-expression, the objects would telegraph to all what was important to you.

One of the earliest American vanes still in existence - in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia History Museum - is a decorative iron banner with the initials of William Penn, two of his partners, and the date 1699. The vane, which topped a mill in Upland, was a business statement combined with a work of art.

While other categories of antiques have come and gone, weather vanes - and the prices they bring - have remained strong because buyers still use them as a form of personal expression. For weather vane collectors, the possibilities are almost infinite.

'Mantiques' could be a ticket to more cash

'Mantiques' could be a ticket to more cash | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

"If it's got some steel and some wood on it, there it is," said Dennis Baker, editor of the New Century Collector, which covers the Utah antique market.

Barker has been in the antique business for 25 years and previously owned his own store. He said mechanical items, things made of steel, old tools, hunting collectibles and old sports equipment are popular and bringing cash to those willing to part with it.

"It's the whole 'man cave' kind of idea," he said. "There are a lot of things in people's attics or garages that are only 30, 40 or 50 years old that are widely collected."

Jennifer Aniston ‘enjoys antique spree’

Jennifer Aniston ‘enjoys antique spree’ | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have reportedly been visiting antique emporiums around Los Angeles as they kit out their new mansion with furniture...

"One of the most expensive items was an 18th-century mahogany rocking chair, which cost in the region of $1 million," a source told UK magazine Grazia. "It was apparently used by Founding Father Benjamin Franklin."

The insider reports that Jennifer fell in love with a $300,000 Georgian bookcase. Her fiancé 41-year-old actor Justin is also said to have grown fond of antiques, with his buys reflecting a more personal meaning.

"Justin's favourite piece was a longcase Tompion English clock from the 1660s, which was said to have been used by British royalty. He recalled his grandfather having a similar one and wanted something like it," an insider explained. "They're both extremely happy with all they've purchased, but they haven't finished yet. The house is going to be crammed with history by the time they are done."

Furniture Detective: Managing organic threats to antique furniture | Antique Trader | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Are you properly defending your antique furniture against organic damage? Be it insects, pets or people, all require some safeguarding when it comes to furniture...

There are a lot of things in the world that are good for your older and antique furniture: controlled temperature and humidity, regular cleaning, careful use and loving attention. But there are also a lot of things out there that are bad for your furniture: flood water, excess light, inappropriate polishes and fire.

But there is yet another classification of harmful elements that you must be aware of: the organic kind. And other than you, there are no organic creatures that are beneficial to antique furniture and some are downright destructive.
