In Lilli Vincenz’s papers, a trove of gay rights history

In Lilli Vincenz’s papers, a trove of gay rights history | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

History is written by the victors, but also by the scrapbookers, the collectors, the keepers, the pack rats. By those who show up, at the beginnings of things and with the right technology. History sometimes comes in pieces. It needs to be reassembled. Pasted and coaxed. Sometimes the finished product still has holes.

In one corner of the climate-controlled manuscript division, on a series of otherwise empty shelves, sits Lilli Vincenz’s unprocessed collection. ...

Twelve boxes. Cream-colored. Heavy. Inside: meticulous fragments of the gay rights movement of the latter half of the 20th century. Political pamphlets, sociological surveys, photographs and obituaries. Diaries of a young woman who was nervous about going into her first gay bar but whose Arlington living room later became the default place for gay women to feel at home.

Not All Disney Princesses Were Legal | Inherited Values

Not All Disney Princesses Were Legal | Inherited Values | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

In the 1920s through the 1940s, carnivals, state fairs, and the like gave away figurines made of plaster to those who successfully answered the calls of carnival game barkers. Because they were made of plaster or chalk, these pieces are called carnival chalkware. Given that they were made of a less-than sturdy material as well as given away to men trying to impress ladies and kids (both temporary conditions!), relatively few of the rather large number of plaster carnival prizes made and given away have survived; thus making them collectible.

When it comes to vintage wastebaskets, I prefer the metalware models (but plastic versions are available too). The big name in collectible vintage wastebaskets is Ransburg, but there are other names, less known and so less sought after.

Circa 1925, manufactured by the Wellington-Stone Company in Chicago, Illinois, this nearly-antique piece is a bronzed & painted cast iron ashtray stand with more than a golfing theme -- it's a real practice putter! Clamoring for Kitchenalia — Historical television show prompts new admirers of old kitchenalia. | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Everyone knows that the kitchen is the hub of the home. So when the wildly successful “Downton Abbey’’ series scampered across our television and computer screens earlier this year, the show’s Edwardian kitchen became a visual primer on class and comfort in our increasingly uncertain times.

...[T]he “Downton Abbey” magic continues to seed interest in a broad swath of antique kitchen utensils and artifacts, from Bennington mixing bowls to turn-of-the-century tiger wood rolling pins.

Treasure Hunting for Michigan-themed Antiques

Treasure Hunting for Michigan-themed Antiques | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Despite repeated requests from family and friends to join in the adventure, it’s something I (selfishly) prefer to do solo. I like going at my own pace, without worrying about a guest who is bored 10 minutes into the day, and getting lost in the nostalgia of it all.

While I rarely have something specific I’m looking for, I always seem to find “just the right thing” to add to my collection. Items featuring Michigan receive top attention of course – especially travel brochures and magazines, food and agriculture focused pieces, unique license plates and slightly-rusted signs. I’m also drawn to cottage- and beach-themed décor, garden art and things that are red (the primary accent color in my home).

This past April, a couple treasures found their way into my heart (and ultimately into my bag). A wooden dachshund with “Frankenmuth Beer” in faded paint was a steal at just $5 (even with its chipped tail – which to me, adds to its character). I also scored 5 juice-size glasses adorned with red roosters – perfect for sampling my favorite made-in-Michigan spirits – for $7.
