Old Book from the 16th Century Can Be Read 6 Different Ways

Old Book from the 16th Century Can Be Read 6 Different Ways | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

What makes each book unique is that two different people can see the same book differently and take very different meanings from it. But this book here, printed back in the late 16th century, lets people actually read six different books individually in one contraption. This treasure on display at the National Library of Sweden discovered by Erik Kwakkel, uses a sixfold dos-à-dos binding technique with the help of six cleverly places clasps. It is quite the display of craftmanship that just doesn't exist too often in modern publishing today and sort of like an old school version of a tablet reader.

A Very Tiny Dollhouse with Very Big Treasures

A Very Tiny Dollhouse with Very Big Treasures | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

I hate dolls. They just creep me out. But, as I’ve mentioned before on the _floss, I have a bizarre fascination with dollhouses.

I’m in good company, though. Included amongst the millions of people interested in miniatures was Colleen Moore, a silent film star whose career fizzled a bit when the talkies came out. But movies weren’t her only passion: a love of miniatures was passed down to her from her father, and in 1928, she enlisted the help of a set designer friend to make a remarkably detailed eight-foot miniature “fairy castle.”

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Absolutely stunning!

Auctions spark Olympic Museum manager’s passion for history

Auctions spark Olympic Museum manager’s passion for history | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Like many museum professionals, Lake Placid Olympic Museum director Alison Haas fell in love with the U.S. version of the "Antiques Roadshow" television program when it first aired on PBS in 1997.

A 1996 graduate of the Potsdam High School, Haas was studying art history at the time at St. Lawrence University in Canton.

"On Saturday mornings, I would wake up while all my other friends were sleeping in, and I would go to auctions," Haas said. "And I became obsessed with objects."

Mary Shelley letters discovered in Essex archive

Mary Shelley letters discovered in Essex archive | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Professor finds cache of previously unpublished letters by author of Frankenstein, written between 1831 and 1849

...The letters date between 1831, nine years after the death of her poet husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and 1849, when Mary Shelley was already unwell with the brain tumour that would kill her two years later, and show a woman who was skilled in charming favours from friends, bursting with pride in and concern for her teenage son – and not unconcerned with frivolities. A last-minute ticket to the coronation of William IV in 1831 necessitated a 3am visit from her hairdresser; she attended the event sporting a plumed headdress ("The whole thing was wondrously splendid – Diamonds & cloth of gold grew common to the eye.")

The later letters, written in an increasingly scrawled hand, are short and distracted, full of apologies for her failing memory and powers. To a number of them is still attached a blob of scarlet wax stamped with the author's own seal – one that was not previously known, according to Crook.
