A state agency’s rare, in-depth look at records seized from six Anderson County spas last week may help investigators determine whether there is a link between the businesses and all of the Asian women recently arrested on prostitution charges there.
Since May of last year, the Safe Harbour program, which promotes awareness of sex trafficking and reaches out to potential victims, has identified 29 minors in Monroe County that are victims of human trafficking, including seven this year.

"In its 2014 Trafficking in Persons report released June 20, the U.S. State Department downgraded Malaysia to its lowest Tier 3 status. The downgrade puts Malaysia at risk of American economic and diplomatic penalties. Thailand, recently in the news for its reliance on slave labor in its seafood industry, was also downgraded to Tier 3, as were Venezuela and Gambia. These four countries join North Korea, Iran, Zimbabwe and 16 other countries as those doing the least to combat human trafficking."
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement on recent federal law enforcement actions in combatting human trafficking:
"Damion St. Patrick Baston, 37, of New York, was convicted on three counts of sex trafficking – both in the United States and Australia – five counts of transporting multiple individuals for prostitution, one count of importation of an alien for prostitution, one count of using a passport secured by false statement, one count of aggravated identity theft and nine counts of money laundering. Baston was also found guilty of illegally reentering the United States after being previously removed."
"More human trafficking than ever before now goes through Pike County, which has become a transition point because of its highways, said Diane Quintiliani, Director of Education and Outreach at Safe Haven of Pike County."
