European leaders have declared multiculturalism a failure. Policies to promote multiculturalism have resulted in a segregated society of parallel communities which do not relate to each other. Representatives of the majority have not dared to criticise negative tendencies, including extremism, in the other community and minorities have not tried to understand the dominant culture and language in the country. This has been the message. The issue itself could hardly be more challenging: how do we ensure social cohesion in Europe today?
