Leaked official document records 330 #drone strikes in #Pakistan | The Bureau of Investigative Journalism | Anti-Exploitation | Scoop.it
mcc43's insight:

The Bureau is today publishing a leaked official document that records details of over 300 drone strikes, including their locations and an assessment of how many people died in each incident.

The document is the fullest official record of drone strikes in Pakistan to have yet been published. It provides rare insight into what the government understands about the campaign.

It also provides details about exactly when and where strikes took place, often including the names of homeowners. These details can be valuable to researchers attempting to verify eyewitness reports – and are often not reported elsewhere. But interestingly, the document stops recording civilian casualties after 2008, even omitting details of well-documented civilian deaths and those that have been acknowledged by the government.

Last July the Bureau published part of the document for the first time. This documented strikes, which hit the northwest tribal areas of Pakistan between 2006 and late 2009, and revealed that the Pakistani government was aware of hundreds of civilian casualties, even in strikes where it had officially denied civilians had died.

The reports are based on information filed to the FATA Secretariat each evening by local Political Agents – senior officials in the field. These agents gather the information from networks of informants in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the area bordering Afghanistan.

Now the Bureau has obtained an updated version of the document, which lists attacks up to late September 2013.

mcc43's insight:

The Edward Snowden saga has turned the Pentagon’s Full Spectrum Dominance doctrine on its Hydra-head. Not only because of the humbling of the whole US security state apparatus, but also for exploding the myth of Full Spectrum Dominance by POTUS.

Obama revealed himself once again as a mediocre politician and an incompetent negotiator. Putin devoured him as a succulent serving of eggs benedict. Glenn Greenwald will be inflicting death by a thousand leaks – because he is in charge of Snowden’s digital treasure chest. And Snowden took a taxi and left the airport – on his own terms.

US Debate on Gay marriage. These voices say 'No and explain why

US Debate on Gay marriage. These voices say 'No and explain why | Anti-Exploitation | Scoop.it
Disparaged as bigots, these diverse voices say they're simply defending American society.
mcc43's insight:

As Perkins sees it, "there will be collateral damage to other freedoms" if gay marriage becomes more common. He cites recent cases involving parents who don't want their children to learn about same-sex marriage in school and photographers who don't want to work at same-sex weddings.

Like Perkins, Nance graduated from Liberty University, an evangelical Christian school in Lynchburg, Va., and has roots in religious conservatism. Like him, she bemoans federal data showing 42% of children are born to unmarried women.

And like single parents, gay couples offer only one side of the gender equation, she says.

"If this new union is to be treated in the same way as marriage, ignoring what the social data says, then you must teach it in the same manner in schools," Nance says. "And to say that children do not need a mother and a father is simply a lie."

mcc43's insight:

Ida B. Wells began aggressively investigating lynching incidents. This led to her publishing her first book, “Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases.” In her book, she wrote that lynching was “an excuse to get rid of Negroes who were acquiring wealth and property and thus keep the race terrorized.”

She also began promoting the idea that African Americans should leave the “town of murderers” and move west. This began a mass movement of African Americans to Oklahoma, causing white businesses to suffer a dramatic loss of business and workers.

Nearly one million #children in #U.S. potentially misdiagnosed with #ADHD, study finds | Anti-Exploitation | Scoop.it
Nearly one million children in the United States are potentially misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder simply because they are the youngest -- and most immature -- in their kindergarten class, according to new research.
mcc43's insight:

hese children are significantly more likely than their older classmates to be prescribed behavior-modifying stimulants such as Ritalin, said Todd Elder, whose study will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Health Economics.

Such inappropriate treatment is particularly worrisome because of the unknown impacts of long-term stimulant use on children's health, Elder said. It also wastes an estimated $320 million-$500 million a year on unnecessary medication -- some $80 million-$90 million of it paid by Medicaid, he said.

An example of the possible consequences that may be already happening. But almost immediately they were equipped with weapons everywhere. Now, remotely operated aircraft require exactly the same way”.

mcc43's insight:

As part of the effort to prevent terrorist attacks, the FBI has a program in which agents recruit undercover informants who then “listen” for developing terror plots. Two new reports show how this preventative program has run amok, possibly entrapping vulnerable people to justify its own existence. Human Rights Watch (HRW)found that most US terrorism prosecutions are “an illusion” created by the authorities. The groundbreaking HRW report was released just after the premiere of a new Al Jazeera documentary, The Informants, which illustrates the human cost of this massive program. This follows yet another report, this one from the New York University School of Law’s Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ), which found that more than two hundred people have been prosecuted in these kinds of cases, and that these cases have been touted as hallmarks of a successful counterterrorism program. CHRGJ spoke with former FBI agents, lawmakers, and advocacy organizations that all worried that the authorities are creating their own “homegrown” terrorism plots, “foiling” them for the cameras, and sending Muslim Americans to prison.

OLD TESTAMENT & ARMED FORCES

Religious zealotry runs rampant in the #U.S. military, and among those wishing to deploy it.

mcc43's insight:

by Philip Giraldi

To be sure, some Christian conservatives who might be described as Armageddonists regard America’s Asian wars as part and parcel of the precursor events that will lead to the Second Coming of Christ, which they eagerly look forward to. Also, a non-interventionist friend of mine who comes from a religiously conservative background explained to me how the contradiction partly derives from the fact that many evangelical Christians hardly relate to the New Testament at all. While they can recite scripture and verse coming from the Old Testament, they are frequently only marginally conversant with the numerous episodes in the New Testament that attest to Jesus’s extolling the virtues of peacemaking and loving one’s neighbor. If true, that means that many evangelicals are much more imbued with the values of an eye-for-an-eye or smiting Philistines than they are with the Sermon on the Mount.

There has undeniably been pushback coming from some evangelical leaders as well as from many younger religious conservatives against America’s constant diet of God-anointed warfare, but given that those who describe themselves as evangelical Christians tend to disproportionately support America’s wars, it is perhaps no surprise to learn that fundamentalist viewpoints prevail in certain quarters in the military. There has indeed been considerable media reporting on the impact of evangelical Christians on the armed services, to include a bizarre account of US military sniper sights being inscribed with citations from the Bible, leading one critic to suggest that the soldiers were being issued “Jesus rifles.”

The US Uses Cancer As A Weapon : Veracity Voice

The US Uses Cancer As A Weapon : Veracity Voice | Anti-Exploitation | Scoop.it
Speaking Truth To Power
mcc43's insight:

At the close of the first Gulf War, Saddam Hussein was denounced as a ferocious villain for ordering his retreating troops to destroy Kuwaiti oil fields, clotting the air with poisonous clouds of black smoke and saturating the ground with swamps of crude. It was justly called an environmental war crime. But months of bombing of Iraq by US and British planes and cruise missiles has left behind an even more deadly and insidious legacy: tons of shell casings, bullets and bomb fragments laced with depleted uranium. In all, the US hit Iraqi targets with more than 970 radioactive bombs and missiles. It took less than a decade for the health consequences from this radioactive bombing campaign to begin to coming into focus. And they are dire, indeed. Iraqi physicians call it “the white death” — leukemia. Since 1990, the incident rate of leukemia in Iraq has grown by more than 600 percent. The situation is compounded by Iraq’s forced isolations and the sadistic sanctions regime, recently described by UN secretary general Kofi Annan as “a humanitarian crisis”, that makes detection and treatment of the cancers all the more difficult. “We have proof of traces of DU in samples taken for analysis and that is really bad for those who assert that cancer cases have grown for other reasons,” said Dr. Umid Mubarak, Iraq’s health minister. - See more at: http://veracityvoice.com/?p=19111#sthash.HqBQQAnC.dpuf

Revolutionary greetings, my people.

Prison is a lonely, dark, cruel reality where you immediately become trapped in a time warp on one of the many modern day plantations that have sprung up like trees across America.

Rape in prison is a part of the fabric as is rotten, evil, racist corrections officers, or COs. One of America’s taboos right up with “There are nopolitical prisoners or torture in America’s prisons.” Rape and the threat of rape by these COs is an act of sexual torture that leaves more mental scars than physical, and the victim of this violent act is no less a victim than if the act was committed out in society.

Zulu: What went down?

S.A.: I was laying in my bunk. When Master Sgt. DeWayne McMills entered my booth and pulled the steel door, and said, “Nigger, get your ass up, strip, take off the jumpsuit, and come to the bars. Turn around, bend over and spread your Black ass open.” I told the master sergeant not to use those racist terms with me and that I was not going to bend over and do nothing because he knows that ain’t the way it is done.

mcc43's insight:

US secretary of State Kerry, when he explains that the USA will only provide “non-lethal support to the Syrian opposition” is in fact:

a) admitting that the USA is providing material support to known terrorist organizations

b) admitting that the USA uses known terrorist organizations as paid and funded mercenary corps

c) responsible for the war crimes which these organizations commit in Syria.

Whether the USA is delivering weapons, or whether the USA lats its allies deliver the weapons while it provides the satellite intelligence to assure that they can be used effectively is absolutely irrelevant with regard to being guilty of crimes under the provisions of the convention against the use of mercenaries.

The Art of Infinite War

The Art of Infinite War | Anti-Exploitation | Scoop.it
Can any of us imagine a time when we aren't stripping down to our socks for travel, or sending security agents into mosques? Welcome to the age of perpetual conflict.
mcc43's insight:

Consider what this means. The president is anti-torture -- which is to say he thinks the water-boarding of actual confirmed terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was wrong. He thinks it was wrong, no matter the goal -- which is to say the president would not countenance the torture of an actual terrorist to foil a plot against the country he's sworn to protect. But the president would countenance the collateral killing of innocent men, women and children by drone in pursuit of an actual terrorist. What is the morality that holds the body of a captured enemy inviolable, but not the body of those who happen to be in the way?
