While considered "White women's problems," disorders such as anorexia and bulimia affect Black women as well.
Claire DeLise's insight:

This article is interesting because we typically see young white, middle to upper class females diagnosed most often. I think it is important to acknowledge and understand that anorexia is dynamic and can affect other individuals as well. It is just slightly surprising because there is typically more body satisfaction in African American culture.

She tells E! News, “I have struggled with an eating disorder for over 10 years, and I take that very seriously.
Claire DeLise's insight:

It bugs the shit out of me that eating disorders are talked about as a topic of pop culture and celebrity status as opposed to the pervasive and destructive psychological disorder that it is. This media influence is definitely part of why eating disorders are so prevalent in our culture.

Anorexia advocates turn medical condition into self-expression
The Conversation
But would you consider anorexia to be a form of self-expression?
Claire DeLise's insight:

I suppose it is technically free speech to engage in "pro ana" websites and culture, but I fear that the majority of these young women (and men)  don't fully understand the repercussions of these dangerous behaviors and the health threatening implications that occur because of them.

Who Recovers from Anorexia Nervosa? | Jacqueline Corcoran | Anorexia | Scoop.it
Anorexia nervosa is marked by purposeful underweight due to intense fears of becoming fat and serious distortions about weight and shape. Anorexia nervosa is a potentially life-threatening and chronic disorder.
Claire DeLise's insight:

Even though there is a small number of people who do recover from anorexia, it is difficult to determine what recovery really is. Often, symptoms of depression and anxiety about food and self belief can linger for a lifetime, even if maladaptive eating patterns are no longer present.

Anxiety, desire for control can be at root of anorexia
The Seattle Times
Anorexia nervosa is characterized by an obsessive fear of gaining weight and a refusal to maintain a healthy body weight. Warning signs may include: • Extreme weight loss.
Claire DeLise's insight:

I completely agree with the articles claims that need for control and anxiety are at the core of anorexia. Maladaptive eating behaviors are symptoms of the disorder, but there is always something deeper; usually negative emotions and a need for control where the individual feels they lack control.

Claire DeLise's insight:

Its fascinating the power that the bonding drug oxytocin can have over a person. I suppose feeling a dose of oxytocin would help a person feel better and maybe help them be more resilient against anorexia.

Long Distance Runners - High Risk to Develop Eating Disorder | Eating Disorder Hope | Anorexia | Scoop.it
Long distance runners are more susceptible to develop an eating disorder. The myth that lower body weight has better results is not proven. (What's the correlation between long distance runners (endurance athletes) and #eatingdisorders?
Claire DeLise's insight:

I found this article interesting because it is suggesting that long distance runners are at a high risk to develop anorexia. This is particularly interesting because you often see rigorous and punishing exercise with anorexia sufferers, so this article states it backwards.

Often, after leaving hospitals or inpatient facilities, it is extremely difficult to maintain healthy eating behaviors without the constant support and supervision. Out patient treatment provides a middle ground step to help recovering anorexic people maintain their progress and receive additional support.
