Madoka Magica's Shinbo, SHAFT Animate Sasami-san@Ganbaranai

Madoka Magica's Shinbo, SHAFT Animate Sasami-san@Ganbaranai | Anime News | Scoop.it

Director Akiyuki Shinbo is teaming up again with his Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari studio SHAFT to make the television anime of Akira's Sasami-san@Ganbaranai light novel series. Katsuhiko Takayama (And Yet the Town Moves, Love, Election, and Chocolate) is in charge of the scripts, and Hiroki Harada (Romeo × Juliet, Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal) is designing the characters.

The story follows a hikikomori (shut-in) named Sasami who is unmotivated about even changing clothes or eating. Her brother takes care of her, even though she despises his slave-like nature. Sasami spends her days viewing the outside world via a "Brother Surveillance Tool" on her computer. In the outside world, the three beautiful Yagami sisters and Sasami's brother are in the middle of relationships worthy of a romantic comedy.

After his earlier Kyōran Kazoku Nikki novels were adapted into anime in 2008, Akira launched the Sasami-san@Ganbaranai light novel series in 2009. The sixth volume shipped last August.

This 30-second anime teaser has more concentrated awesome than a lot of live-action movie trailers

This 30-second anime teaser has more concentrated awesome than a lot of live-action movie trailers | Anime News | Scoop.it

Check out this amazing action-packed teaser for 009 Re: Cyborg, the new anime movie from Kenji Kamiyama, the director best known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. In just half a minute, there are some great glimpses of urban destruction, our hero flying and outrunning missiles, and running inside an explosion. We're officially sold.

009 Re: Cyborg is a new version of the classic manga series Cyborg 009, which is — not surprisingly — about nine cyborgs, created by the evil Black Ghost Organization, which wants to start World War III. The nine cyborgs rebel, led by Cyborg 009, Joe Shimamura, and they battle to stop Black Ghost's evil plans. In this new version, they're apparently spies instead. Among its many other great features, the above 30-second teaser gives you a super-fast rundown of each of the nine cyborgs and his/her superpowers. Rock on.

This movie comes out October 27 in Japan, and hopefully will have some kind of theatrical release in the United States.

Rock Band Linkin Park's Nendoroid Petite Figures Unveiled | Anime News | Scoop.it

Figure maker Good Smile Company revealed the prototypes for its Nendoroid Petite interpretation of the rock band Linkin Park on Thursday. The six figures recreate the band members "as if they were in the middle of a live performance," complete with instruments and a special stage pedestal (along with standard Nendoroid Petite stands). The figures will go on sale in September.

Good Smile Company and the band unveiled the designs during a charity art show event to support the victims of the March 11 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster last November.

Linkin Park's song "The Catalyst" from the A Thousand Suns album was used in the opening movie of the Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. arcade game. The band's earlier music video for its song "Breaking the Habit" involved animator Kazuto Nakazawa (Kill Bill, Samurai Champloo, Genius Party Beyond) and Tokyo-based G.D.H. International. Linkin Park's DJ Joe Hahn also remixed supercell's "Black Rock Shooter" song for a bonus extra stop-motion video included with the first Black Rock Shooter anime.

The "MAJOR: World Series Hen - Yume no Shunkan e Special Edition" feature will air at 4:00 p.m. and then again at 10:00 p.m.

The station will also air the 2008 Major: Yūjō no Winning Shot film on the same day at 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The channel will additionally air selected episodes from the franchise's sixth television anime series on the same day.

Anime Reanimates on Adult Swim

Anime Reanimates on Adult Swim | Anime News | Scoop.it

Like a magic sword lost for a thousand years or your bad-seed vampire sister, anime is coming back.
Cartoon Network’s action-oriented programming block Toonami is back on Tuesday, this time late at night during Adult Swim—and as an anime-only affair, at least for now. “We were mostly looking for older-skewing material,” said Jason DeMarco, vp of strategic marketing and promotions for Cartoon and AS. “We could probably do Family Guy in the middle of the night, and it would do better. But we love anime.”
There are other considerations too. Off-net episodes of Fox’s Family Guy, which have pushed the network into the prime-time top 10, come with a hefty price tag, and “with anime, the market is so depressed that the license can just be trade-out,” said DeMarco. “For April Fools (when the network aired Toonami as a practical joke), we just traded a commercial, and they let us air an episode once.” Toonami is restarting on a shoestring—and ironically, shows from the original lineup, like Dragon Ball Z, are so popular the network can’t afford them. Instead, it’s opting to debut new series Casshern Sins and Deadman Wonderland alongside niche favorite Bleach and classics like Cowboy Bebop.
It would be understating the case considerably to say that anime fans are enthusiastic. Google Dragon Ball Z in English, and you’ll get 114 million hits. Google Deadman Wonderland, which doesn’t even have an official English-language dub yet, and you’ll get more than 4 million. Men and women both watch anime, and their net worth is surprisingly high. Fully one-third of Hulu-watching anime fans (and the site does a booming business in the material) have a median household income of $75,000 or more.
But that passion isn’t easy to monetize. The anime market took a major nosedive in 2005 when services like Netflix started pounding away at DVD sales. “The value of packaged media has just collapsed,” said Anime News Network editor in chief Christopher Macdonald. “It hit anime even harder than other markets because it’s geared toward younger and tech-savvy people, and there’s a long delay between when it comes out in Asia and when it comes out in North America. All that lends itself to piracy.”
However, that problem isn’t insoluble, according to Hulu. “Most people—not all people, but most—don’t want to pirate,” said Hulu’s head of content, Andy Forssell. “Most people will make the choice to go to the clean, well-lit place.”
Fans have quietly made imported cartoons a valuable proposition for Hulu, which airs 298 different anime series. One of the top five most-watched shows—the other four are high-rated broadcast comedies—is Naruto Shippuden, the tale of a ninja-in-training destined to become the greatest ninja ever.
Sharpen your swords.

Red Riding Hood Cha Cha Manga Returns as Monthly Series

Red Riding Hood Cha Cha Manga Returns as Monthly Series | Anime News | Scoop.it

The July issue of Shueisha's Cookie magazine is announcing on Saturday that Min Ayahana is relaunching her most well-known manga series, the shōjo fantasy comedy Red Riding Hood Cha Cha (Akazukin Cha Cha). The full-fledged monthly Red Riding Hood Cha Cha N (Akazukin Cha Cha N) series will start in the next Cookie issue on June 26 — 12 years after she initially ended the story.

The original Red Riding Hood Cha Cha series ran in Shueisha's Ribon magazine from 1992 to 2000, and Shueisha published 13 compiled book volumes. The story followed the daily slapstick adventures of a budding magician named Cha Cha, her childhood friend Riiya (who happens to be a wolf boy), and a magician's apprentice named Shiine. The friends study at the Urara Academy in a magical land.

The manga inspired a loose 1994-1995 television anime adaptation in which Cha Cha could transform into a Magical Princess during the first year of episodes. (Shingo Katori of the popular idol group SMAP voiced Riiya.) A three-episode 1995-1996 original video anime project came after the television series.

Ayahana already created two Red Riding Hood Cha Cha N one-shot manga last year. In those manga shorts, Cha Cha finds herself living in modern Tokyo. The full-fledged monthly Red Riding Hood Cha Cha N series will also be set in Tokyo.
