Kuroko's Basketball Threat Letter Update: Doujinshi Event in Osaka Cancelled

Kuroko's Basketball Threat Letter Update: Doujinshi Event in Osaka Cancelled | Anime News | Scoop.it

Doujinshi event organizing company Youmedia announced today that they decided to cancel the upcoming joint doujinshi event "Kansai Only Festa 2012 Autumn Part 2" by the request from the local police. The event was scheduled to be held at one of the biggest exhibition space in Japan, INTEX Osaka, in Suminoe-ku, Osaka-city, on November 18th. The event focused on five popular manga/anime series, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Fate/stay night, High Kyuu!!, Hetalia: Axis Powers, and Kuroko's Basketball.

As reported, MBS, the TV station in Osaka which broadcasted the TV anime adaptation of Kuroko's Basketball, has received a threat letter with a liquid substance in the end of last month. The local police has also found some of the letters were posted in the post boxes near INTEX Osaka. There is a high possibility that the intimidator actually is in the area or at least is well aware of the place.
Considering the situation, the Suminoe police station strongly requested Youmedia to cancel the
event yesterday on November 5th, and the organizer finally agreed to accept the request.

Ghost in the Shell's Oshii to Helm His 1st Live-Action English Film

Ghost in the Shell's Oshii to Helm His 1st Live-Action English Film | Anime News | Scoop.it

The Nakamura Group Advantage, a Canadian entertainment company, announced on Monday that the next film from acclaimed anime director Mamoru Oshii will be a live-action military science-fiction thriller called The Last Druid: Garm Wars. This will be the first live-action English-language film from the director of the first two Ghost in the Shell films, The Sky Crawlers, and the live-action film Avalon.

The Nakamura Group Advantage describes the story:
Taking place in a world of war known as Annwn, Garm Wars sets the scene with clone soldiers from 3 military tribes, in a bloody and perpetual battle of air, land and technology. One clone, Khara, finds herself separated from battle and on the run with unlikely companions. In seeking to know more about their joint existence, the fugitives instead find an unrelenting truth and the greatest battle of their lives.
Geoffrey Gunn (Fangs of War) collaborated on the English-language script, and producer and Production I.G President Mitsuhisa Ishikawa (Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers) is once again working with Oshii. Ken Nakamura (Fangs of War, Provocateur), the CEO of the Nakamura Group Advantage, is also producing the film with Tetsu Fujimura (Tekken), the head of the Japanese movie business consulting firm Filosophia. Lon Molnar, the head of the visual effects studio Intelligent Creatures, is serving as the VFX supervisor.

Oshii first developed the film over 15 years ago, just after finishing the first Ghost in the Shell film at Production I.G in 1995. The Japanese company Bandai Visual had unveiled the project in 1997 under the tentative title of G.R.M. The Record of Garm War (Garumu Senki).

However, Oshii explained, "[…] Unfortunately, at that time, the digital environment needed to realize the visuals was too undeveloped, and I was unable to create and release this film to the world. However, now in 2012, the environment for producing films has transformed, especially in digital technology which is currently operating at a shocking level compared to the time I first conceived this project. At long last, Garm Wars' time has come."

When the project was unveiled in 1997, it was planned as a feature-length animation/live-action/special-effects CG film with a tentative release date in 2000. Writer Kazunori Ito (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor the Mobile Police, .hack franchise) co-developed the story, and Shinji Higuchi (The Sinking of Japan director, Gamera films' special-effects director) would have served as the special effects director. Three pilot films (pictured left) were made, but then the project stalled until now. According to Oshii, the renamed The Last Druid: Garm Wars project will now have a new staff and cast.

IG Port, the parent company of Production I.G, had formed a Canadian subsidiary in Ottawa last month to jointly produce films with overseas partners. Production I.G financed 66.7% of the "Production I.G Canadian Bureau" spinoff, and The Nakamura Group Advantage contributed 28.3%. Filosophia put in the remaining 5%.

Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki had asked Oshii about a hypothetical live-action Patlabor movie during a talk show last month, but Oshii declined to comment. Oshii did add that he had "suddenly become busy." When Suzuki later said that he heard about an Oshii-linked project that was foreign-funded, Oshii replied by saying, "That's a different story."

The list of disappointments is different from the previous poll of overrated anime, since the earlier one was about disagreeing with the consensus opinions of others, while the new ranking is about personal reaction.

"Kick-Heart" Crowd-Funded Anime Reaches Initial Kickstarter Funding Goal

"Kick-Heart" Crowd-Funded Anime Reaches Initial Kickstarter Funding Goal | Anime News | Scoop.it

Production IG’s experiment with crowdfunding in “Kick-Heart” supervised and written by one of my most favorite directors in Masaki Yuasa has hit its initial funding goal after a slow start earlier this month when it first launched.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of the online anime community and press, the project has proven that crowdfunding can indeed work for small-scale projects like these. I’ll admit I had my doubts like anyone else regarding the viability of the project, owing to Yuasa’s polarizing style, a style that sees him deliberately avoid conventional Japanese animation styles in order to tell layered, thoughtful stories.

However, that’s not all that’s in play regarding the Kickstarter project. Now, Production IG have added additional stretch goals for the project with six days to go:

175k = Spanish Subtitles
200k = English Dub, Premier Screening and Party (details TBA)
225k = 3-5 minute animated Oorutaichi music video directed by Masaaki Yuasa
400k = +30 minutes of extended animation (total length 40 minutes)
1 Million = Kick-heart Feature Film

"Oreimo" Season Two to Premiere in April 2013

"Oreimo" Season Two to Premiere in April 2013 | Anime News | Scoop.it

The future of the Oreimo anime's second season was decided on stage at Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2012 today by Ayana Taketatsu (voice of Kirino), Kana Hanazawa (Kuroneko), creator (author Tsukasa Fushimi), as well as staff from both Aniplex (publisher) and Dengeki Bunko (publisher of the light novels).

The meeting's agenda kicked off with discussion of when to air season two. October was immediately rejected since the re-edited "True Route" version of the first season just kicked off its run on Friday. Spring was mentioned as an option since both Taketatsu and Hanazawa like that season, but in the end they decided they needed to know more about the production status before deciding an air date. This entailed the revelation that A-1 Pictures (a subsidiary of Aniplex) will be animating season two instead of AIC Build for scheduling reasons. However, it sounds like the original staff members will be gathered together for the project.

Once they got that announcement out of the way, they arrived at the April 2013 premiere of season two, with the note that taking that amount of time will mean the show will look better.

Next everyone spent some time brain storming character tie-ups. You may remember Kirino's Chiba Mazda campaign, and there was also a successful collaboration that resulted (it was announced) in a new record of 8,400 commemorative ticket sales for Chiba Urban Monorail. The idea of "Kiririn P" (P for Produced) projects was introduced. Taketatsu thought a Kirino-produced clothing line would be cool, and Hanazawa added that Kuroneko could do a collaboration with a goth loli fashion magazine. They're also looking for more ways to stay tight with Chiba.

Anyways, spring! Does that do it for you Oreimo fans or are you wondering how you'll make it through the winter?

The Anime Network Pulls "To-LOVE-Ru Darkness" Stream

The Anime Network Pulls "To-LOVE-Ru Darkness" Stream | Anime News | Scoop.it

Streaming anime portal The Anime Network has removed To-Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness from its site and listings after putting the first episode up for streaming over half a day before Japanese broadcast.

The portal had previously announced that the series would be streamed at 9pm EST on October 4th while the first airing in Japan was originally scheduled at 1:00 AM JST on October 5th, which would have made it Noon EST in the US. At issue is the fact that many users commented on The Anime Network's own bulletin board that the announced streaming times would have meant that the TAN stream would have aired the episode half a day before Japan. A representative of the portal made the following statement regarding the issue:

Nah, the hours are right, are you adjusting for Japan Time?

Our simulcast will go out as planned, as we have had our release dates and hours approved by the licensors. Thanks.

European steaming service Anime On Demand is also reporting via Twitter that they will have to delay their streams as well with no immediate word on when it will resume.

We're going to be delayed on Chuunibyo, To Love-Ru, Hidamari Sketch and Busou Shinki due to issues outside of our hands by looks of it.

With the stream now delayed and possibly affecting the rest of the TBS licensed series for streaming, this incident will serve as another harsh lesson to the industry when it comes to simulcasts and the consequences of making even the most minor mistake, as the rip from the The Anime Network has already proliferated via filesharing services.

Anyone looking forward to the series despite the incident?

Sailor Moon Finally Getting Her Action Figure Due From Bandai

Sailor Moon Finally Getting Her Action Figure Due From Bandai | Anime News | Scoop.it

Naoko Takeuchi's (the one named) Sailor Moon has been battling evil for 20 years across manga, anime, live action television and even the stage, but unlike a lot of her magical girl contemporaries, the heroine's fashion doll/statue to action figure ratio is staggeringly imbalanced. As revealed at Japan's Tamashii Nation 2012 preview event, however, the tide is starting to sort of turn with the reveal of Bandai's upcoming S.H. Figuarts Sailor Moon figure. From the looks of things, the figure will come packed with the usual S.H. Figuarts accessories including swappable hands and a posable base, plus a tiny Luna the cat and likely crazy effect parts down the road. The figure reveal didn't clarify a specific release date, but sometime in 2013 seems likely... perhaps followed by figures of the other Sailor Scouts? You can peep a few shots of the upcoming S.H. Figuarts Sailor Moon action figure after the jump.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Sings New Crayon Shin-chan Theme

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Sings New Crayon Shin-chan Theme | Anime News | Scoop.it

Model/singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu announced on Saturday that she is singing the new theme song for the Crayon Shin-chan television anime. The announcement came during the TV Asahi Dream Festival 2012 event at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Gymnasium. This is her first anime theme song.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a self-described huge Crayon Shin-chan fan who has all of the original manga volumes and catches the anime films as they come out. As Kyary Pamyu Pamyu appeared onstage at Saturday's event, Crayon Shin-chan's title character Shinosuke (or rather, a costumed performer) made a surprise entrance to express his excitement over the news.

Music producer and DJ Yasutaka Nakata (One Piece Film Z, Five Numbers!) wrote and scored the new "Kimi ni 100 Percent" song, and Shinosuke is contributing by shouting during the song's interludes. The song will begin airing in the anime on October 19.

The Mainichi Shimbun paper's Mantan Web posted more photographs from the announcement.
