The Making of 'Chico & Rita': How a Low-Budget Animation Beat the Odds to Compete for Oscar

The Making of 'Chico & Rita': How a Low-Budget Animation Beat the Odds to Compete for Oscar | Animation News | Scoop.it
Noble PR
LONDON – If Chico & Rita wins the Oscar for best animated feature Sunday night, it will be a real long-shot victory – especially since the movie is up against big-budget features like Paramount’s Rango and DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2.

Chico and Rita Trailer

Chico & Rita: Film Review
But then Chico & Rita already has a long history of overcoming the odds.
Oscar-winning Spanish filmmaker Fernando Trueba – his Belle Epoque was named best foreign-language film in 1994 – and artist and designer Javier Mariscal, along with U.K.-based animation production label Magic Light Pictures, have been working on Chico & Rita, a love story set to the beat of Cuban jazz, since as far back as 2003. And back then few would have bet on its commercial viability – let along its eventual Oscar chances.
PHOTOS: Academy Awards 2012 Nominees
At the start, the biggest challenge facing the filmmakers was that the story they wanted to tell – that of a young piano player’s fractious love affair with a jazz singer that takes them from Cuba to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas – sounded too adult for an animated movie.
There were just no immediate precendents: Waltz With Bashir, set amid the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and Persepolis, which followed a young Iranian girl’s coming-of-age, were still in the future. And the fanciful French film The Triplets of Belleville was only just beginning to peddle its way to global success. Additionally, Mariscal had never made a movie, while Trueba had never directed an animated film. And so when they approached potential backers at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, there were no immediate takers.
But Trueba tells The Hollywood Reporter he never had any doubts that an animated feature was possible. “I was always talking to Javier [Mariscal] about making a movie and one day I saw his drawings of Havana, Cuba. And then I knew, that’s what to do, write a love story about a singer and a piano player and work with him and his drawings,” Trueba says. “We had the desire, passion and music to work together and that made it easy to spend so much time together on this to do it. We’re still friends now."
The adult content they envisioned might have made it a tough sell, but “we never thought about it being live action, not for a second,” Trueba continues. “It was always going to be an animation for us.”
Magic Light Pictures, set up in 2002 by former Aardman Animations executive and producer Michael Rose and producer Martin Pope, also became convinced of the project’s potential. And so, the new animation house created a promo and pitch while Trueba and Mariscal began assembling a top flight Spanish creative team.
PHOTOS: 10 Inappropriately Sex Cartoon Characters
One key player who was drafted early on was Spanish novelist, TV and film writer Ignacio Martinez de Pison, who began polishing the script. The filmmakers also brought in art department whizz Tonno Errando, who joined them as a co-director.
Producer Christina Huete, Trueba’s wife, helped nurture the project by finding financing from Spanish broadcasters TVE and TV3.
Further financial support came from the Isle of Man, where Steve Christian headed up the government-supported film financing and production group.  Magic Lantern’s Pope and Rose had produced two previous films on the Isle of Man, so they knew Christian well. And by the 2006 edition of Cannes, Christian and the Isle of Man’s CinemaNX were on board, joining the tapestry of Spanish financiers and backers that had been assembled, and the project’s budget of €10 million ($13 million) was within reach.
“We pitched the project to distributors and financiers and everyone who saw the script and the early teaser trailer loved it but everyone said it was very risky financially,” Rose recounts. “So a lot of people told us to go and make it and then they’d talk.”
Pope says Christian’s belief and backing and the Spanish deals drummed up by Huete allowed the project to reach critical mass, financially.
It still took several more years for all the pieces to fall into place – the film sold to Walt Disney International in Spain, where it eventually grossed more $1 million during its theatrical release. And HanWay, the British sales and finance house, sold it elsewhere around the world.
The movie’s actual physical production took more than two years, although Pope puts that into perspetive, explaining, “Clearly 2½ years for an animation is relatively quick."
Eventually, after the movie played the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010, it sold to the small U.S. distributor GKids, who entered it in the Oscar race.
Its nomination was greeted by both disbelief and joy by Rose and Pope, allowing them to make their second visit to the Oscars in just two year’s time. Last year, their short film The Gruffalo was nominated in the best animated short film category.
“It’s a wonderful reward for the last seven years,” Rose says. “We commit ourselves [at Magic Light] to doing very few projects so we can try and make them of the highest quality and this feels like we are reaching the standards we aim for.”

Frederator Launches New Cartoon Hangover Channel

Frederator Launches New Cartoon Hangover Channel | Animation News | Scoop.it

via animationmagazine.net

Frederator Launches New Cartoon Hangover Channel

Indie animation company Frederator Networks will launch the premium YouTube channel Cartoon Hangover with three series beginning July 2012. Cartoon Hangover plans to produce and program 10 original series and 39 original shorts in the next three years. The programming will target young adults with character-driven comedy cartoons, according to Frederator founder and president Fred Seibert.

The channel’s three initial animated series are the start of a multi-year programming plan:

Bravest Warriors, created by Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time), stars four 16-year-old heroes-for-hire warping around galaxies, saving cute alien worlds with their emotions. Breehn Burns (Dr. Tran) will executive produce and write.

Based on his comic book series, James Kochalka’s SuperF*ckers follows the non-heroic adventures of a group of superheroes who drink, smoke, and swear, yet do nothing super (except by accident). Kochalka, the Vermont Cartoonist Laureate responsible for the Ignatz Award-winning online comic diary American Elf, will write. Indie filmmaker Fran Krause (“Nosy Bear”) is on board as showrunner. SuperF*ckers will be produced in association with Top Shelf Productions.

Under the Cartoon Hangover banner, Frederator will also produce a series of original cartoon shorts (The Cartoon Hangover Show) in the tradition of the company’s run of development projects for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Those programs are now responsible for launching more than a dozen hit series including The Fairly OddParents, Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, and Adventure Time.

“More than anything, we’re eager to help and support cartoon filmmakers, tomorrow’s hitmakers, realize their animated visions of remarkable stories and terrific characters,” says Frederator VP of Development Eric Homan. “Holy hell, are these cartoons funny,” adds Frederator founder and president Fred Seibert. “We’re confident our cartoons will put all other so-called Internet cartoons to shame. Eat it, broadcast TV!”

Frederator Studios was founded by Hanna-Barbera president Fred Seibert in 1998 as a unique incubator for big animation ideas by producing original cartoons. More than 200 short films have resulted in 16 hit series for television and the Internet, including Butch Hartman’s The Fairly OddParents, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Dexter’s Laboratory, Craig McCracken’s The Powerpuff Girls, Eric Robles’s Fanboy & Chum Chum, and Pendleton Ward’s Adventure Time. Frederator is also in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation to develop and produce feature animated films, and YouTube to create new cartoon content and channels.

“This will be the fifth short anthology show we’ve produced over the years,” adds Seibert. “We will be looking for outrageous, funny shots targeting over-14 age group. We’re always searching for the next great animation star, just as we did in the past, working with amazing talent such Genndy Tartakovsy, Craig McCracken. Butch Hartman and Penn Ward. We’re fortunate to be witnessing an unbelievable phase of our business, where shows such as Gumball , Adventure Time and Regular Show have allowed new voices to create dynamic content for a new world.”

Frederator is currently looking for Cartoon Hangover pitches. For more information, contact Eric Homan at eric@frederator.com.

My Little Supergirl: Lauren Faust's Supergirl for Super Best Friends Forever | Animation News | Scoop.it

My Little Supergirl: Lauren Faust’s Supergirl for Super Best Friends Forever

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic creator Lauren Faust has stepped back from her pastel equines to work on other projects. One of those projects is Super Best Friends Forever, a shorts series for DC Nation, and this is her Supergirl.

As we've mentioned before, Super Best Friends Forever stars Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman, who team up to fight crime. Faust, who also worked on The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, is a great choice to handle these superheroines, and this first Supergirl image suggests that she's bringing her My Little Pony flair to DC's lady heroes.

Please let this turn into a 22-minute series. Please, please.

A street in Welsh seaside resort Penarth became the first location for the new series of Doctor Who this morning, when shooting got underway on some scenes with the Ponds and an interesting guest star.

A sweep of Twitter yielded these pictures of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill on set, as well as The Fast Show‘s Mark Williams.

There’s a lot of talk about Williams playing Rory’s dad, but I can’t quite track it down to a source. Still, look – they’ve got the same taste in jackets, whoever they are.

This image reveals the director and the DP, as well as some sort of context for where the scene being filmed fits into its episode.

Saul Metzstein directed the features Late Night Shopping and Guy X, as well as a documentary on Dogme 95.

Mr. Groening, the artist and creator of that long-running animated Fox series (which celebrates its 500th episode on Sunday), will be the namesake of the Matt Groening Chair in Animation at the U.C.L.A. Details And First Stills From Esben Toft Jacobsen's BEYOND BEYOND

Details And First Stills From Esben Toft Jacobsen's BEYOND BEYOND | Animation News | Scoop.it

via twitchfilm.com (Todd Brown)

DETAILS AND FIRST STILLS FROM ESBEN TOFT JACOBSEN'S BEYOND BEYOND

On Monday Twitch brought the first news from Beyond Beyond, the upcoming animated feature from The Great Bear director Esben Toft Jacobsen.

At the time all we had was the title and two pieces of concept art released as part of the project's involvement at the Cartoon Movie project market but with the film being presented at the EFM we can now follow that up with the first three actual stills from the film - added to the gallery with the concept art below - and story details.

Beyond Beyond is a story about wanting the impossible. And it is a story about a little boy, not old enough to know the guidebook to life, picking a fight with the most powerful force. Learning about existence little by little.

Johan and his father have lived at sea for as long as Johan can remember. Or at least since he was three when his mother disappeared. Johan likes the ship. It has a greenhouse where they grow carrots, and it has fishing nets. Johan is good at diving and at mechanics, and helps his father re- pairing the ship. One day when Johans father go for provisions and Johan is left alone on the boat, he recieves a distress call on the radio with a clue to where his mother is.

Beyond Beyond takes place in two universes: the world of the living and the world of the dead - The Kingdom of the Feather King. The world of the living looks like our world apart from being populated by rabbits instead of humans. They act as humans, live in houses, sail ships and have hu- man feelings. The Kingdom of the Feather King is an infinitely large place with infinite numbers of rabbits. As the story Beyond Beyond goes on The Kingdom of the Feather King changes from being a very sad place to be an amazing place to spend eternity. And this change is what Beyond Beyond is all about.

Matt Groening to Receive Walk of Fame Star

It’s hard to believe that The Simpsons creator Matt Groening still hasn’t received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Well, that wrong is going to be set right next Tuesday, Feb. 14 when the brilliant animator and cartoonist will get the 2,459th star on Hollywood Blvd in the TV category.

Hosted by Hollywood chamber of commerce president Leron Gulber and Simpsons voices Hank Azaria (Moe, Chief Wiggum, Apu, and many others) and Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpsons), the festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The Simpsons will celebrate its 500th episode on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 8PM ET/PT on FOX. Groening has forever left an indelible mark on society. Voted the “Best Show of the 20th Century” by Time Magazine, the series has left a path of catch-phrases (Homer’s “D’oh!” and Bart’s “Eat my shorts”) and societal commentary. It has also given birth to a theme park ride and United States postage stamps, personally designed by Groening. He served as producer and writer during the four-year process of the long-awaited hit feature film The Simpsons Movie, released in July 2007.

Dude, if you dig the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you’ll have to find a way to check out this year’s Toy Fair in New York (Feb. 12-15). That’s where Nickelodeon and Playmates will preview their extensive new TMNT product line which is based on Nick’s new CG-animated show set to premiere in the fall.

Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, TMNT aired from 1988 to 1996 and inspired some of the most popular licensed toys during those years. Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo will be featured in the new toys launched by Playmate in August.

“We’re excited to continue working with our long-standing partner Playmates on the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line,” says Manuel Torres, senior VP of global toys and consumer electronics, Nickelodeon. “Playmates understands the property and has helped us reinterpret the toys from a fresh perspective, while staying true to the action and fantasy of this iconic franchise. Julian Assange to guest star on The Simpsons

Julian Assange to guest star on The Simpsons | Animation News | Scoop.it

Controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will be a guest character and voice on animated TV comedy “The Simpsons,” playing a neighbour of the family after they move from their home in fictional Springfield.

Assange’s “brief” guest starring role will be on the show’s Feb. 19 program, which marks the 500th episode of “The Simpsons,”

In the episode, the Simpsons — Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and their pets — leave home and move to a rugged and isolated area where the find themselves living next to Assange, who portrays himself.

Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly magazine that the show’s creative team realizes Assange is “controversial,” but that in putting together the show they avoided delving into his “legal situation.” Instead, the writers made sure the appearance was satirical. Assange recorded his lines remotely from Britain.

Assange is currently under house arrest outside London and due to appear before Britain’s Supreme Court on Wednesday to appeal his extradition to Sweden where he has been accused of sexual misconduct by two former WikiLeaks volunteers.

He angered U.S. officials in 2010 when WikiLeaks, in partnership with major newspapers, published a trove of leaked diplomatic cables that exposed the candid views of American officials and their allies about a wide range of topics including the wars in Afghanistan and, at the time, Iraq.

Assange and his supporters are concerned that if he is extradited to Sweden, U.S. officials might attempt to have him brought to the United States where possibly he could be charged for crimes related to the leaked documents.

Last week, Kremlin-funded English language channel Russia Today revealed it had given Assange his own television talk show. Assange will interview noteworthy figures on a show dubbed “The World Tomorrow,” the channel said.

Fox Launches a 'Simpsons' 500-Episode Marathon

Fox Launches a 'Simpsons' 500-Episode Marathon | Animation News | Scoop.it
Here’s a Guinness World Record Homer and Bart Simpson would definitely get behind. Fox has announced that in honor of the 500th episode of The Simpsons, it is sponsoring a fan marathon of all 500 episodes of the show, in order on Feb. 8.

The last time this particular record was set was in 2010 when three viewers (Kevin Coon, Victor Lopez and Farris Hodo) beat out 100 other participants by watching all six season of Fox’s 24 series. That’ s right! The three die-hard fans stayed awake for 86 hours, 6 minute and 41 seconds to watch every episode of Kiefer Sutherland-starring action show.

In order to break the 24 record, The Simpsons fans will have to watch around 200 hours of the long-running toon. It should be noted that this is only 64 hours short of the scientifically monitored record set for a human to go without sleep in 1965. If you’re one of the die-hard fans of Matt Groening’s zeitgeist-defining show, you should visit SimpsonsMarathon.com to sign up for the marathon screening which will take place in Los Angeles at Hollywood & Highland. If you’re one of the lucky winners, you’ll also win $10,500 on top of the bragging rights, of course!

Del Toro, Gutierrez Collaborate on 'Day of the Dead' Pic

Guillermo del Toro will produce a new CG-animated feature, directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the creator of Nickelodeon’s series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. The movie, which is called Day of the Dead, will be produced by Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze of Chatrone Inc. at Dallas studio Reel FX. The movie will be ready for delivery in the fall of 2012.

Described a a Romeo and Juliet story set against the colorful Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, the movie was penned by Gutierrez and Doug Langdale, whose long list of credits includes The Return of Jafar, Darkwing Duck, The X’s and Kung Fu Panda. It represents the first time in almost twenty years — since 1993’s Cronos — that del Toro has collaborated on a feature project set in Mexico.

“I have admired Jorge’s work for a long time,” say del Toro. “He has a unique aesthetic and sense of humor. Day of the Dead offers a perfect opportunity for his sensibilities to shine. This is a colorful, vibrant, vital fable that utilizes the animation medium in an incredible way. The object of the tale is not only to talk about life but to dazzle us – jolt us- into living to the fullest. To join Reel FX, Cary Granat and Jorge in this adventure is a privilege and a joy.”

This Transformers toy has balls. That is all.

Just as Saturn devoured his children, the Michael Bay's Transformers are consuming our memories of an innocent, gentler time when the Decepticons ogled robot pin-ups.

To wit, Racer-Kun, a heroic Autobot from Playskool's 1986 Japanese "My First Transformers" line, has taken a retroactive cue (or two!) from Devastator, the swinging star of Revenge of The Fallen.

Was this inadvertent? Of course not. This was just the first, silent salvo of a decades-long shadow campaign to refit all the robots in disguise with prominent external testicles. This reinvention will come full circle in time for Transformers 4, a.k.a. Ballsformers 4: Balls to the Balls - Origins, starring Racer-Kun and hopefully the Dinobots. With balls!

The Mad Marketing of Jack Davis's Commercials [Video] - ComicsAlliance

The Mad Marketing of Jack Davis's Commercials [Video] - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

via comicsalliance.com - Chris Sims

If you're a comic book reader, you're probably most familiar with the legendary Jack Davis from his work as the artist of the classic EC horror titles of the '50s and his status as one of the founding creators of MAD Magazine. What you might not know, however, is that there was a time when he was one of the highest-paid illustrators in the world, thanks to his work in advertising.

His career as a commercial illustrator hit its height in the '60s, and if you've never seen the ads he produced for products like Gilette razors, sleeping pills and various boozes -- not to be used in combination with each other -- I can assure you that they're exactly as weird as you want them to be. To prove it, we've got a mix of classic Jack Davis commercials after the cut, and trust me: you're going to want to watch it.

One of the most interesting things about this is that they went with Davis's art for a cereal commercial starring comedienne Ruth Buzzi, which is a testament to how highly regarded Davis was in the world of advertising. Someone thought it would be better -- or at least faster and easier to produce -- to have Davis do it rather than bringing Buzzi in and filming it live.

As for the rest of the ads, they are a delight. I'm particularly fond of the first one for Utica Club Beer and the assertion that it'll mellow you out unless you're a cartoon mobster. That had to have reigned as the best beer commercial until the Ramones did three singles for Steel Reserve.

The best one by far, however, has to be the truly insane ad for Cask Mountain Wine. I have no idea why someone decided that the best way to sell this stuff was to assure customers that hillbillies had sex in the stuff you're drinking, but Davis pulls it off. In fact, with his expressive, friendly cartooning and hilarious exaggerations, he makes the idea of drinking something that was mixed with hillbilly love leavings downright appealing.

Well, no, he doesn't. It's still the most disgusting thing I've ever heard. But he comes close, and when you're working with that much of a handicap, that's gotta count for something.

Incidentally, Cask Mountain Wine doesn't seem to be around anymore, but Davis certainly is, and he's still one of the greats.

New Details on TRON: UPRISING and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series on Disney XD

New Details on TRON: UPRISING and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series on Disney XD | Animation News | Scoop.it

voa collider.com (Dave Trumbore)

New Details on TRON: UPRISING and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series.

TRON: UPRISING will debut in April, with the full series airing in June.

When the Walt Disney Company and Marvel announced their joint partnership a few years ago, both sides knew that there were some incredible creative opportunities and a whole lot of coin to be made in the years ahead. That more or less sums up what the Disney Channels’ President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said during a presentation at TCA. While I’m paraphrasing, of course, Marsh did go on to announce the next step in their partnership: a block of Marvel-themed series on Disney XD which will be called Marvel Universe, featuring a new collaboration, Ultimate Spider-Man. The new iteration will be the first time that Spidey, voiced by Drake Bell (Superhero Movie), won’t be going it along, as he’ll be joined by White Tiger, Iron Fist, Power Man and Nova, all of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. While that’s good news for fans of the web-head, Marsh also talked about the premiere of their anticipated animated series, TRON: Uprising. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

We brought you a teaser trailer for TRON: Uprising nearly a year ago as well as a clip from this past summer’s Comic-Con. Now, two years in the making, Disney is planning on rolling out the full series in June of this year. But first, they’re taking an interesting approach on the debut. According to Marsh:

“We’re taking a 10-part micro-sode approach, which will begin airing three-minute pieces in April.”

So, they’re probably going to attach these three-minute micro-clips at the end of other popular shows or perhaps port them over to a TRON: Uprising website? No idea. In the meantime, what we do know is that the animated series will feature a combination of traditional (2D) animation with 3D CG animation that will:

“Offer a revolutionary visual aesthetic that is really going to help redefine the kind of animation that you can do on television around the globe. And luckily, we’ve been able to use the same writers, the same producers, and some of the same vehicle designers, who’ve created the images for the feature film, in the series.”

As for timing, this series will play out between the original TRON and TRON: Legacy. Here’s what Marsh has to say about the plot:

“What’s happened is that Tron has been badly injured by villainous Clu, but he has found a protege, a brilliant young mechanic, who is another program like himself, named Beck and voiced by Elijah Wood, who TRON decides he is going to train to be the next TRON.”

I’ve never been a huge fan of the TRON franchise myself, but I do like the look of it and what they’re doing with the stories. As long as there are plenty of light-cycle races, I won’t complain too much.

Finally, here’s everything Marsh said about the upcoming Marvel Universe on Disney XD.

“When The Walt Disney Company and Marvel announced their partnership a couple of years ago, I very publicly stated that I believed that Disney XD was going to be one of the primary beneficiaries of that partnership. And today, we are announcing the next evolution of that relationship. So, on April 1st, we will roll out a brand new Marvel branded block on Disney XD called Marvel Universe, which will showcase our first new animated series, a collaboration with Marvel, called Ultimate Spider Man. Now, joining Spider Man will be the second season of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The new Spider Man will feature a teenage Peter Parker played by Drake Bell, but this time, he’s no longer going it alone. As the newest member of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, he finds himself on a team with four other teenage Marvel superheroes. He’s got White Tiger, Iron Fist, Power Man and Nova. Now, this has implications for Spidey, of course, because it means that, for the first time, while he’s losing his independence, he’s gaining a cadre of crime fighting cohorts.”

New Daffy Short to Debut with 'Journey 2'

The new Looney Tunes 3-D toon Daffy’s Rhapsody will premiere before screenings of Warner Bros.’ Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Directed by Matthew O’Callaghan (Coyote Falls, I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat, Curious George), the new short will debut in theaters on Feb. 10 and will be presented in 3D and Imax as well as standard 2D.

In this colorful adventure, a relaxing evening at the theater turns into hunting season as Elmer Fudd is surprised by the unexpected appearance of his perpetual and ever-elusive target, Daffy Duck, on the stage. As Elmer gives chase, Daffy cleverly evades him while regaling the audience with a song that illustrates his plight—how hunters will never leave him alone.

The short stars the vocal talents of the late Mel Blanc, long renowned for his characterizations of such Looney luminaries as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety Bird, Porky Pig, Yosemite Sam, Speedy Gonzales, Sylvester and Foghorn Leghorn, as well other memorable characters, such as Barney Rubble and Dino the Dinosaur.

Daffy’s Rhapsody is produced by Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone. The short’s executive producer is Sam Register. The lyrics to Daffy’s song were written by the legendary Looney Tunes team of Warren Foster and Michael Maltese.

Scenes from the upcoming Avatar: The Legend of Korra are coming out in dribs and drabs — take a look here if you haven't seen them — but we're never ones to complain.

The latest tidbit picks up where the last clips left off. A group of Metalbending police officers have come to arrest Korra for disrupting the peace after she clobbered some hoodlums. The video quality isn't spectacular, but we won't be churlish about sneak peeks. The series will air sometime this year.
