More than a photo but less than a video - Daily Exhaust - Michael Mulvey

More than a photo but less than a video - Daily Exhaust - Michael Mulvey | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it
"More than a photo but less than a video

[...]Perhaps this GIF renaissance has to do with that fact that we're all moving onto mobile devices like iPhones, iPads where Flash was never designed to work well and thus, has been banished. And if it hasn't been banished it doesn't work well.

While expression, storytelling and animation are possible now with the emergence of HTML5 and advanced Javascript classes and frameworks, there's something beautifully simple about the animated GIF. It requires no plug-in and works as good now as it did 14 years ago when it was conceived.

It's an autonomous nugget of awesomeness.

An airstream camper of expression."

Ordinary Show - Vanessa Louzon - 2008

Ordinary Show - Vanessa Louzon - 2008 | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it
"Ordinary Show is an ongoing internet-based project that started in 2008 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
A single white page is filled with a long series of extremely short looped video clips, like a deconstructed film stretched over space and fragmented into scenes put one next to the other and played at the same time.

The artist uses the page as her diary. She obsessively records everything around her: the mundane, the small, the insignificant, the repetitive, the beautiful, the ugly, the flashy, the mechanical, as not to miss anything, as if everything was to suddenly stop. A strip-show neon light flashing, a supermarket close circuit TV, a lady bathing in the sea, are thus frozen in time as they loop indefinitely and hypnotically on the screen. As they accumulate on the page day after day, they form an evolving record of each one of the artist's footsteps in the places, seasons, and states of mind she finds herself in.

Ordinary Show has been selected to participate in the FILE 2009 - Electronic Language International Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 27 July - 30 Aug.

Vanessa Louzon graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, and now works on various art, video, and design projects. She lives and works in Tel Aviv.

From Me To You - cinemagraph - Jamie Beck

From Me To You - cinemagraph - Jamie Beck | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it

2009 animated gif : jaime martinez photography

2009 animated gif : jaime martinez photography | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it
"The animated gif is an artifact of bygone eras in web design, though many of us gnash our teeth when coming across the pesky relics and kvetch that they should be banned as avatar icons on sites such as Twitter, where the jangly movement almost feels like a nonconsensual affront. Not everyone looks at a gif and thinks that 1998 called and wants its HTML back. Maybe that’s just us. Artist Jamie Martinez sees the gif as a medium that deserves an artist’s exploration (arguing that until now, no artist has had anything to do with animated gifs, at least in public). In his 2009 animated gif series, Martinez takes the gif to a place somewhere between retro photography and old 3-D postcards, with a collection that is contemplative, moody, wistful and strangely provocative."

Videogramo // Francoise Gamma | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it
"Objetos ontológicos del folklore electrónico. Basados en idolatrías totales, siempre al borde del abismo."

"Surreal worlds collide and explode in urge to become visible. People, whose skin absorbed hallucinations of a last psychedelic trip, stare at you with empty eyes. They make love, play games and participate in some strange, indescribable, yet attractive events…

This is not a description of some sci-fi movie. This is Videogramo – an artist from Barcelona, pouring out his mind in a form of animated or static images, which colours send us back in time, when computers where still young. Below is a small interview to helps us get closer to his creative paradigm.[...]"

Thomas Cazals: Le grand retour du GIF animé (Animated GIFs strike back)

Thomas Cazals: Le grand retour du GIF animé (Animated GIFs strike back) | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it

The First Annual Detroit .gif Group Show - exhibition - 2009

The First Annual Detroit .gif Group Show - exhibition - 2009 | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it
"Detroit starts the year off by presenting the first recurring .gif group exhibition, The First Annual Detroit .gif Group Show. Gif is an abbreviation for Graphics Interchange Format which is a type of file that has been used for static pictures and simple animations since the late 80s.

The exhibition's starting point is our fascination with the gif's clear frames and inclusive availability. The First Annual Detroit .gif Group Show is an internet based international exhibition where the invitation to participate has been spread through forums, mailing lists and art schools. In the 2009 edition the chosen gifs come from Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Finland, USA, France and Austria.

"About the gallery

Since our founding in 2006, Detroit Gallery has produced a number of exhibitions and hosted several other events. Our focus is on young swedish and international artists and due to our non-profit thinking we have established a platform for non commercial art. Detroit Gallery´s work extend outside the conventional gallery room and often includes collaborations with external actors and takes place in less traditional contexts."

Rick Silva - Antlers WiFi

Rick Silva - Antlers WiFi | Animated Gif As Art | Scoop.it
“Rick Silva’s ongoing project Antler’s Wifi depicts a series of animations that combine geometric glitch aesthetic with serene landscapes and natural iconography. The weekly updates to this blog project vary in complexity and density, but all the images share an acute aesthetic that Silva has been developing over the past several years. The visual elements that comprise the animations in Antler’s Wifi – a telling name – often juxtapose vistas of the icy surrounding of Silva’s current Calgary home with diagrams that appear to be algorithmic interpretations of geological structures found beneath the soil. These images not only appear to hold secret mathematical equations, but also appear to be pseudo-scientific data visualizations of some hidden incalculable source.

The crystalline patterns and undulating shapes that appear in the more recent iterations of this work – “an aesthetic that was rebooted” according to Silva at the beginning of 2011 – create a tranquil yet playful reinterpretation of the landscape image. It appears as though the line drawings and artificial peaks that mirror the mountain ranges and remote lakes hold resonant frequencies that generate their rhythms and patterns. The short gif cycles appear as though they contain sonic qualities that never actually manifest through playback. This lack of an aural link to the repetition and rhythm of the animations accentuates the remoteness of the imagery providing viewers with hypnotic and haunting micro-scenarios.

The directness of the pairings made by Silva throughout this work symbolize a need for understanding and contemplation of the visual world outside out windows and away from our screens. The meandering presence that dictates the visual paths and pace of the aesthetic that Silva captures within this work is akin to the wanderings of an amateur cartographer mapping the foothills of his backyard. In some images the false sense of simplicity that landscapes embody is paired with similar elementary geometric spaces for deviations and abnormalities to occur. Silva compares the hidden ecology of any environment to the abstract complexity of euclidian geometry throughout many iterations of the work. Observers of this project can see how the lo-fi superimposition of data-projection highlights the correlations that Silva wishes to explore in these diaristic and delicate renderings.” – Nicholas O’Brien
