Today, we dedicate this post to seven famous personalities; we briefly examine what they are known for in popular culture, and we explore the part of their selves that have condemned violence against animals in the strongest of words and the most sincere of deeds.
I don't mind when people have uninformed opinions about animal welfare. I'm used to it (I work at a vet clinic, after all). It's when they use their misinformation and gut feelings to try to hurt animals that I love.
We always must remember it’s not a matter of “what’s” for dinner but “who’s” for dinner as we routinely and wantonly slaughter sentience for unneeded meals to the tune of billions of animals per year. Surely we can do better and it’s really easy for most of us to stop consuming pain and misery.
(CELEBRITY NEWS) Actor Leonardo DiCaprio shared some promising news on tiger populations in Nepal recently. Through camera traps, the World Wildlife Fund reports that numbers have doubled in three years thanks to a ...
The USDA has proposed a rule that will require large-scale commercial breeders that sell pets over the Internet or by mail or phone, sight-unseen, to be licensed and inspected under the federal Animal Welfare Act.
And the good news gets better: the count is a minimum population size, as for every animal seen, others present (and others present in unsurveyed areas) are missed. This is particularly important because fewer than 2500 ...
Scientists Conclude Nonhuman Animals are Conscious Beings. About time! All animals, especially mammals, have a nervous and central nervous system just like our own. So when deciding how to treat those animals, we should imagine ourselves in their position.
Painchaud explained that under the yet-to-be-proposed bylaw, once an animal infringes on the security of a person or another animal, it will be deemed dangerous. The sentence for an animal deemed to be dangerous is euthanasia, she continued. "Our responsibility is to protect citizens from public nuisances," she said.
“Nearly three-quarters of respondents who vacation with their pets noted that they're typically able to find animal-friendly accommodations when traveling, which is good news for all the Lassies and Luckys out there.” ...
Officers rescued a dog Tuesday morning that they found covered in mange, with open wounds that had festered, scabbed and melded the dog onto the carpet of the home's lanai.
More than 90% of the puppies in traditional pet stores come from commercial mass breeding facilities, commonly known as “puppy mills”. Thanks to public education campaigns such as Best Friends Animal Society’s “Puppies Aren’t Products”, pet lovers are becoming ever more aware of the atrocities inherent in puppy mills. Abundant in the mid-western states, the breeding dogs at these operations suffer unimaginable cruelty, languishing in deplorable squalid conditions, deprived of adequate shelter, basic veterinary care, and human contact. Crammed into filthy wire cages, they can barely even turn around, much less ever feel the joy of running on grass or a gentle hand stroking their fur.
The London Olympics have captured the full attention of the public and the mainstream media: there’s something compelling about watching humans pushing themselves to extraordinary athletic achievements. Yet in comparison to some animals, even exceptionally talented humans are slow and weak.
The energy here is everywhere – it doesn’t matter if I’m up in my room with five other animal rights activists, at the lunch buffet, or hanging out on the shuttle bus with some vegans I’ve never met before. To see hundreds and hundreds of animal rights activists all here, doing their thing, showing that our movement is making a difference and growing so rapidly: that’s what inspires me. As many speakers have said in so many words this weekend: animal rights is the most important social justice issue of our time. Let’s make it happen, by any means necessary!

Dr. Allen McConnell Professor of Psychology at Miami University and his team recently conducted two studies where they recruited pet owners (mostly dog and cat owners although some others were included) and compared their lives against non-pet owners.
Mercy For Animals is an organization based out of Los Angeles fighting for animal rights. They say investigations have unconvered the pork sold in Walmart stores comes from factory farms where the pigs are not only neglected, but tortured and abused.
"For those unfamiliar to veganism, it can be to easy overlook that the compassion associated with helping animals is meant to extend to helping humans, as well. The beautiful thing about choosing a plant-based diet is that in one choice, you can start to help save the world. Literally. Armed with this information, I can't imagine that someone would think sitting down to three meat-free meals a day would prevent me from caring about human causes."
While comparative research on this topic is naturally hampered by the inability of non-human animals, and often humans, to clearly and readily communicate about their internal states, the following observations can be stated ...
I forgive myself for not realizing that true compassion and responsibility for animals would have us supporting them as much as possible to be free of disease and ailments. I forgive myself for not realizing that using animals to ...
NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. Larry lies behind bars in a pen, his eyes red and swollen. The harbour seal with “an amazing little personality” who arrived at Marineland about eight years ago is now a shadow of his former self. After repeated exposure to unhealthy water, he has gone blind. Larry isn’t the only sea mammal living in distress at Marineland, the sprawling attraction in Niagara Falls. In extensive interviews with the Toronto Star, eight former Marineland staffers describe a pattern of neglect that has repeatedly resulted in animal suffering. What the public doesn’t see is the deterioration of marine mammals that become sick, suffer fur loss, skin damage and even blindness because of recurring water problems, they say. They also point to chronic staffing shortages that leave trainers unable to provide a minimum standard of care for animals to do well in captivity.
Just today I learned that hunters in Minnesota are upset when dogs are harmed and killed by traps. The stories they tell about the pain, suffering, and death of their own and other beloved companion animals are horrific and bring me to tears. But there’s something going on here that nags me a lot. While the pain, suffering, and death of their companion dogs move them they still want to be able to hunt other sentient beings who also are capable of enduring pain and suffering, not only when they’re shot and killed but when they’re stalked and otherwise chased.
Lady Gaga is the new poster girl for anti-fur activists. Move over Kim Kardashian. The 26-year-old singer, who professes to be a humanitarian, apparently draws the line at skinning animals alive.
Activists of various stripes undoubtedly experience periods of burnout. Working long hours—typically without pay and little appreciation—on campaigns or issues where victories are few and far between can be demoralizing. Some social change activists get so frustrated with the perceived lack of results from their hard work and the rampant apathy among the general public that they give up entirely and retreat from activism. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
"What to do on this lovely sunny Sunday afternoon? Let's take the kids down to St. Patrick's Church to watch the impaled seagull -- one of God's creatures -- as it dies a slow, agonizing death. (Isn't that what Jesus would do?) Let's give them a first-hand lesson in human cruelty, apathy, and inaction. I'm sure they'll not soon forget it."
On Thursday, Governor Deval Patrick signed “An Act Further Regulating Animal Control” into law, which will update laws that have been on the books for decades and create stronger, more comprehensive animal protection laws in a variety of areas.
Trusting my head and heart, I grasped the outstretched sharp-clawed flipper of my new friend. To my utter surprise, the seal responded in kind by delicately squeezing my hand three times in a row with a deliberate measured pause between each squeeze. After several more minutes my friend slid gently off my lap and stared at me with large compassion-filled eyes before slipping below the ocean’s surface. Had the seal consciously attempted to use the opportunity of our touch as a tactile method of communication? What was the seal trying to say?
