Dogs in the classroom: teaching children about kindness and empathy

Dogs in the classroom: teaching children about kindness and empathy | Animals R Us | Scoop.it
Children love their new teaching assistants, says Clover Stroud, as classroom canines make reading a great adventure.

Wynona was trained by Tracey Berridge, a canine behaviourist trainer, who set up Dogs Helping Kids in 2003 to take dogs into classrooms, both as therapeutic aids for teaching children about kindness and empathy, and also for providing reading support.

Stretched out on her blanket, Wynona’s calming presence is almost tangible as the children work near her, occasionally looking up to smile at their canine classroom assistant, before returning to their writing...

12 year-old founder of Lobby For Animals | Animals R Us | Scoop.it

When I learned of Thomas Ponce I was blown away. You mean to tell me that a 12-year-old started his own lobbying group? And was the regional coordinator of Fin Free Florida? I can’t recall what I was doing at age 12, but I certainly wasn’t trying to make the world a better place for animals. As I got to know Thomas, I was very impressed by his intellect, compassion, and strategic view of animal rights. He is the Mozart of the animal rights movement. I am sure you will be equally blown away by Thomas.

Are we doing enough to protect animals in rescue organizations? - Rocky View Weekly | Animals R Us | Scoop.it

With recent news stories about alleged animal neglect at a Southern Alberta animal rescue sanctuary, I can’t help but wonder why rescues organizations aren’t held to stricter standards. Currently, there is no legislation in place specifically for animal rescue organizations and the only “rules” theses places have to follow are from the outdated Animal Protection Act and Animal Protection Regulations.

Colorado animal-shelter world roiled by new no-kill group - Denver Post

Colorado animal-shelter world roiled by new no-kill group - Denver Post | Animals R Us | Scoop.it

Shelter managers will tell you that no-kill is everyone's goal. But they worry about other, unintended, inhumane outcomes. What if shelters become full? Will animals wind up being warehoused until they go "kennel crazy" and beome unadoptable? If an animal is turned away for lack of space, will it wind up in another place more likely to euthanize it? Winograd and no-kill supporters argue that warehousing will not be a problem. Other animal-welfare advocates are not so sure.

Can Humans Know What Animals Experience? | Tim Zimmermann

Can Humans Know What Animals Experience? | Tim Zimmermann | Animals R Us | Scoop.it

A few decades ago the idea of animal consciousness was radical. Today, the idea that animals have emotions, feelings, awareness is an idea that is changing our understanding of the relationship between humans and non-human animals. But Jeff Warren goes on to argue that we can go even further, that we can find points of connection to non-human animal experience.

Can Documentary Films Be Catalysts For Change? - Huffington Post Canada | Animals R Us | Scoop.it
I have been making documentaries since the mid 90s, exploring international subjects and themes, from musicians to war-affected children, HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa to the Right to Water movement, and my latest film is about animal sentience. I am drawn to change-makers; people who dedicate themselves to building a better world. I'm often asked: Do you really believe in change? And while I acknowledge that it's hard to be hopeful sometimes, I do, undeniably, believe that a better world is always possible.

Animal-rights advocates sense turning point in chimpanzee research - The Hill (blog) | Animals R Us | Scoop.it

In coming weeks, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) will make decisions that could reclassify the way the federal government and private Americans are allowed to use chimps. Animal rights proponents hope the regulators will restrict the apes from being used in commercial and research activities, which they sense as indicative of a larger cultural shift away from animal testing.
