Poll: Should Horse-Drawn Carriages Be Banned? | Animals - fact and fiction | Scoop.it
Most New York City Council members remain largely undecided about a possible ban of the horse-drawn carriages of Central Park. While New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing ahead with his campaign promise to ban the carriages, the move also pits him against the labor unions that helped propel him to office.

I understand that it is nice to have a horse drag you around through central park, but how unfair is that to the horses. They rarely get a break, they sit work through horrible weather, and they have tons of weight on their bodies. I think the working conditions should be better for these horses.

One of the eldest residents of our Romanian bear sanctuary has been given a new lease of life thanks to an unusual animal companion.

Prince Charles is a big old bear of about 40 years old. Despite a harsh captive life before rescue, he’s way outlived a bear’s usual life expectancy of 15-20 years in the wild.

A lifetime in captivity

Prince Charles came to us in 2012 from a volunteer wildlife rescue group called Project Ursus. They inherited him, along with a number of other bears, when they to

US Government: Give Panthers Room To Roam! | Animals - fact and fiction | Scoop.it
Florida panthers once prowled and flourished in woodlands and swamps throughout the Southeast. But as the region was settled, fear of these solitary, secretive predators led to wanton killing, and development claimed their habitat. Today, the panther is recognized as Florida’s official state animal, but only 100 to 160 of the big cats remain in a single population in south Florida.

EMERGENCY: Tell USFWS to Protect Wisconsin's Wolves

Carina Eriksson's insight:

Wolves in Wisconsin may be perilously close to collapse due to aggressive hunting and trapping seasons, poaching, and the unregulated year-round use of dogs to pursue wolves. Worse, the state is likely not accurately counting the number of wolves in its borders. The state of Wisconsin interpreted its wolf census data in secret last winter — for the first time in 25 years.

Help Save Sea Turtles from Extinction

Help Save Sea Turtles from Extinction | Animals - fact and fiction | Scoop.it

Earthrace Conservation hopes to bring about lasting change that will benefit marine life and the oceans.

about the petition

Sea turtle populations are in freefall. The Pacific leatherback is destined for extinction. Others will follow suit if something isn’t done about this soon. A major contributor to the problem is turtle hunting, which is practiced in more than 40 countries and accounts for more than 100,000 deaths annually.

The methods of killing can be barbaric, and the hunting places increased pressure on species that are already listed as endangered or critically endangered.
