Crown breaks down fines in wildlife trafficking case | Fort Macleod Gazette

Judge Jerry Legrandeur got the detail he needed Thursday on the fines proposed for two Hutterite men guilty of illegally trafficking in bald and golden eagles and other wildlife.

Crown prosecutor Lisa Weich gave the judge a breakdown on the proposed fines for Nathan Tschetter and William Tschetter, along with 13 previous cases she studied.

“I will be taking time to look at all the cases,” Judge Legrandeur said.

The judge will give his decision Wednesday, June 6 in Fort Macleod provincial court....

“The fines have been increasing and increasing over time because unlawfully trafficking in wildlife has not stopped,” Weich said....

Pet-iquette: Exotic birds are poached in their own countries

Q: How can one stop the poaching of exotic birds and what laws pertain to it?

A: Exotic birds are poached in their own countries and then smuggled into India, where they are sold openly. They come in containers in ships through Kolkata and Chennai and most customs officials are aware of the trade and profit from it. The trade is run by mafia that makes crores. The birds are smuggled across the country in trains, mislabeled as goods. The railways promised not to allow any live cargo but so many railway station masters are on the take. It is up to NGOs to keep a vigil on the railways. The law regarding exotic birds is very odd and encourages poaching as only ‘Indian’ birds can be caught under the Wildlife Protection Act. Shops selling Macaws and Cockatiels are never asked for any import licences or international permissions by either the forest department or the police, so this murderous trade carries on openly.

Three area men owe a combined $17,000 in fines and restitution for poaching seven mule deer from a truck while driving up and down the Chief Joseph Highway on a night in 2009.

As a part of their sentences for the illegal killings, 26-year-old Thomas G. Howard, 30-year-old Douglas Hutchins and 26-year-old Cody Waters have each been placed on unsupervised probation and banned from hunting or fishing for the next six years.

All three men had confessed to the poaching after being confronted by Powell Game Warden Chris Queen in 2010 and each finalized plea agreements with the Park County Attorney’s office over the last month. Waters was the last to be sentenced, on Tuesday in the Powell Circuit Courtroom....

Conservationist Speaks Out: How tourism can help tackle poaching

Conservationist Speaks Out: How tourism can help tackle poaching | Wildlife Trafficking: Who Does it? Allows it? | Scoop.it
Ian Craig, one of Africa's leading conservationists, says local communities are leading the charge to stamp out poaching.

I firmly believe that the one-off legal sale of 105,000 tons of ivory to the Far East in 2009 stimulated a demand that was previously not there. It had a catalytic effect from which the whole African continent is now suffering....

Tourism plays a huge role in persuading local people that there is a future in community-led conservation; there is now a series of lodges available to holidaymakers, run by local people, for local people, that are the equal of anything national parks can offer....

MANILA — Thirty-six turtles seized from smugglers, including 20 of one of the world's rarest species, are to be returned from Hong Kong to the Philippines, an official said Wednesday.

It will mark the first time a protected Philippine species seized from the illegal wildlife trade abroad has been returned, Philippine environment department deputy chief Luz Corpuz told AFP.

Wildlife authorities in Hong Kong will hand the 20 pond turtles and 16 South Asian box turtles to Philippine enforcement officers on Friday, she said.
"They are Philippine species, and returning them back to their natural habitat is a big accomplishment for our conservation efforts," Corpuz said of the Philippine pond turtles, which are found only in the island of Palawan.......

Members of the Pilanesberg National Park Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) stand guard as conservationists and police investigate the scene of a rhino poaching incident April 19, 2012. Elephant and rhino poaching is surging, conservationists say, an illegal piece of Asia's scramble for African resources, driven by the growing purchasing power of the region's newly affluent classes.

In South Africa, nearly two rhinos a day are being killed to meet demand for the animal's horn, which is worth more than its weight in gold.
