Fish Louse (Argulus) - fishhealth - Pond Life | Animal Management | Scoop.it
Argulus (fish louse) is a common fish parasite. The adult Argulus is visible without magnification, measuring up to 10mm in diameter. Argulus attaches itself to the skin or fins and feeds on blood by inserting its stylet feeding apparatus into the flesh. The various hooks, barbs and suckers that the fish louse uses to attach itself to the fish can cause further damage. Fish lice are very hard to erradicate.

Lernaea (anchor worm) is not actually a worm, it is a copepod crustacean. The adult anchor worm is visible without magnification, measuring 1-1.5cm in length. Only the female Lernaea is parasitic, the egg sacks giving her a Y-shaped appearance. Male Lernaea are relatively short lived and die soon after mating.
