Dynamically Loading Controllers and Views with AngularJS and RequireJS

Dynamically Loading Controllers and Views with AngularJS and RequireJS | AngularJS | Scoop.it

AngularJS provides a simple way to associate a view with a controller and load everything at runtime using the $routeProvider object. Routing code is typically put in a module’s config() function.

While this type of code works great for defining routes it requires controller scripts to be loaded upfront in the main shell page by default. That works fine in some scenarios but what if you have a lot of controller scripts and views in a given application and want to dynamically load them on-the-fly at runtime? One way of dealing with that scenario is to define a resolve property on each route and assign it a function that returns a promise. The function can handle dynamically loading the script containing the target controller and resolve the promise once the load is complete.

AngularJS Pain Points

AngularJS Pain Points | AngularJS | Scoop.it

At first glance I was very impressed with Angular – the two-way binding removes the need for constantly updating the view and the scope objects makes for a clean separation between the controller and the view. There were other elements which were very appealing as well – a complete documentation site, a focus on testability, and a clean separation of concerns through built-in dependency injection. As I said, at first glance it definitely looks very impressive.

Now that I’m more familiar with AngularJS I am unfortunately less impressed. The framework is definitely powerful, but there are various factors which seem to make Angular more painful to work with than I thought would be the case. There are definitely some great features in the framework, but I definitely don’t think Angular is the clear winner in the JavaScript-framework-wars by any means.

Animation in AngularJS

Animation in AngularJS | AngularJS | Scoop.it
AngularJS now provides full support for animations direct from it's core

There are three ways to perform animations in AngularJS: Using CSS3 Transitions, CSS3 Animations andusing JavaScript (these are referred to as CSS3-enabled and JavaScript-enabled animations). CSS3 transitions aremuch easier to use since they don't require any JavaScript code and JavaScript-enabled animations require you todefine an animation within your module (much like you would define a filter or a directive).

Using Firebase and AngularJS with AngularFire

Using Firebase and AngularJS with AngularFire | AngularJS | Scoop.it
An initial look at using the AngularFire library to link up Firebase and AngularJS by creating a simple client-side search app.

This past week I been taking a closer look at Firebase. In particular I have been looking at using AngularJS in combination with it in order to create web apps which don’t require any significant back-end code. This has been made a bit easier with the recent(ish) release of AngularFire which is probably the easiest way to connect the two technologies up.

Reactive, real-time log search with Play, Akka, AngularJS and Elasticsearch

Reactive, real-time log search with Play, Akka, AngularJS and Elasticsearch | AngularJS | Scoop.it

So, I’ve decided to contribute an Activator Template to TypeSafe (will submit soon, promise!). Having recently become more and more involved in Elasticsearch, I saw a great opportunity to put together a neat “reactive” application combining Play & Akka with the “bonsai cool” percolation feature of Elasticsearch. Then, to put a cherry on top, use AngularJS on the client-side to create a dynamically updating UI.

What I came up with is slightly contrived – a very basic real-time log entry search tool – but I think it provides a really nice base for apps that want to integrate this bunch of technologies.

What A Select $watch() Teaches Me About ngModel And AngularJS

What A Select $watch() Teaches Me About ngModel And AngularJS | AngularJS | Scoop.it
Ben Nadel looks at creating a data-silo for ngModel bindings and how the layer of indirection has a longer-term payoff.

The two-way data-binding in AngularJS is very powerful, especially when there is a direct mapping of input-data to view-model-data. But, when the data mapping requires some translation, interpretation, or validation, you need to get your hands a little dirty - you need to get more involved in how data changes are propagated within your Controller(s).

Angular service or factory?

Angular service or factory? | AngularJS | Scoop.it

In various AngularJS tutorials and documentation, the authors choose to useservice or factory but don't explain why you would use one or the other. Few mention that value and constant are also options.

Let's see why you would use one over the other. We should also understand how providers work:

If you want your function to be called like a normal function, use factory. If you want your function to be instantiated with the new operator, useservice. If you don't know the difference, use factory.
