BP and Shell raided after allegations they colluded to rig oil prices | AC Affairs | Scoop.it

European commission carries out 'unannounced inspections' to investigate claims prices were rigged for more than a decade

The London offices of BP and Shell have been raided by European regulators investigating allegations they have "colluded" to rig oil prices for more than a decade.

The European commission said its officers carried out "unannounced inspections" at several oil companies in London, the Netherlands and Norway to investigate claims they may have "colluded in reporting distorted prices to a price reporting agency [PRA] to manipulate the published prices for a number of oil and biofuel products".

The commission said the alleged price collusion, which may have been going on since 2002, could have had a "huge impact" on the price of petrol at the pumps "potentially harming final consumers".

Labour voters increasingly turning against the poor, study says | AC Affairs | Scoop.it

A report for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation examined the links between public attitudes to poverty, welfare and the state of the economy using data collected as part of the British Social Attitudes survey.

Sid Lowe: The feeble challenge offered by Real Madrid means that little praise has been lavished on Tito Vilanova's champions

Tito Vilanova did not see his team win the league. It was coming up to midnight on Saturday and across the city, out near the airport at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, the final whistle was about to go on the title race. But the end had effectively come months before and it had come, at least in part, like this: with Real Madrid conceding a goal from a set piece and limply dropping points away...

'Suspended coffee' helps those in need

'Suspended coffee' helps those in need | AC Affairs | Scoop.it

Your daily visit to a coffee shop could also give you a chance to do a small good deed.

The daily trip to a local coffee shop may give you your caffeine fix - but thanks to a new scheme, it could also give you a chance to do a small good deed.

The idea of "Suspended Coffee" is simple: When you buy yourself a coffee at a participating cafe, you also pay for a second one - which can then be claimed by someone who cannot afford it themselves.

They don't have to "prove" anything to claim one, but the scheme relies on the good faith of everyone involved.

The movement has been growing in popularity since it began in Italy several years ago, and has already been embraced by hundreds of coffee shops around the world. Now Starbucks has announced it will soon be adopting a version of the scheme...

How scandals became '-gates'

How scandals became '-gates' | AC Affairs | Scoop.it

Forty years after the Watergate scandal, '-gate' has become a global term for scandal.

t's 40 years since the world became familiar with the word "Watergate", as televised hearings of the committee investigating Richard Nixon began. How did the name of an American hotel complex set the standard for labelling controversies?

Camillagate, Sachsgate, Hackgate, Plebgate.

Editors and social commentators are undeniably fond of a "-gate".

The suffix has become so common that it is increasingly used in parody - an admission that the outrage is tongue-in-check.

But recent media furores such as Andrew Mitchell's Plebgate, or Gategate, and David Cameron's Horsegate, show the tag is alive and well as shorthand for scandal...

Apostrophe now: Bad grammar and the people who hate it | AC Affairs | Scoop.it

Grammar is back in fashion at schools. But why does it make adults so cross when other adults break the rules?

A new grammar and spelling test arrives in primary schools in England this week. It is the first time in a while that such emphasis has been put on grammar.

Some of the questions will seem straightforward for many adults, such as where to place a comma or a colon in a sentence. But other aspects - identifying different types of adverbs or distinguishing between subordinating and co-ordinating connectives - might raise eyebrows...
