UEFA admits UK's Gibraltar as its newest member despite opposition by Spain

UEFA admits UK's Gibraltar as its newest member despite opposition by Spain | AngloCatalan Affairs | Scoop.it

Decision had the “support of the entire Gibraltarian community”, says Gibraltar Football Association head · Only Spain and Belarus vote against Gibraltar admission · Gibraltar becomes sixth non UN country to be accepted into UEFA.

The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar is UEFA's newest member, after XXXVII Ordinary UEFA Congress has accepted the application by the Gibraltar Football Association. The decision comes as a blow to Spain, a country that has been opposing the Gibraltarian bid till the end.

Spain opposed Gibraltar being acknowledged as a sporting country. Madrid considers Gibraltar to be a colony, despite it is now a highly self-governing country with its own Constitution. The New York Times said this week that Spain was even considering "to remove marquee clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona from European competition" if Gibraltar was given UEFA membership...

Barcelona's New Nike Kit Sees Stripes Return

Barcelona's New Nike Kit Sees Stripes Return | AngloCatalan Affairs | Scoop.it

Nike are showing signs of recovery after some woeful kits in recent years, and Barcelona's home strip for the 2013-14 season is one of the beneficiaries.

The traditional blue and claret stripes return for Barça in "a modern design which sees the stipes peter off on the sleeves". Very flamboyant.

Sid Lowe: The feeble challenge offered by Real Madrid means that little praise has been lavished on Tito Vilanova's champions

Tito Vilanova did not see his team win the league. It was coming up to midnight on Saturday and across the city, out near the airport at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, the final whistle was about to go on the title race. But the end had effectively come months before and it had come, at least in part, like this: with Real Madrid conceding a goal from a set piece and limply dropping points away...

How Spain learned to play the beautiful game

How Spain learned to play the beautiful game | AngloCatalan Affairs | Scoop.it

Much of the book deals with regional stories and rivalries. Mr Burns, born a stone’s throw from Real’s stadium but a Barça fan and an author of books about both clubs, traces their complicated interconnections with Spanish politics—notably, the civil war and the dictatorship of General Franco. It is a delicate task, involving the links between Barça and Catalan nationalism, Franco’s use of the game for political ends and the intricate links between Basque nationalism, football and the Catholic church. Mr Burns, who has reported on the land of his birth for many years, threads his way skilfully through it...
