Research shows kids learning second language matters

Research shows kids learning second language matters | Angelika's German Magazine | Scoop.it
COMPELLING research that has found the value to schoolchildren of learning more than one language will be explained in a public lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast next Tuesday.

USC lecturer in education Dr Peter Grainger will outline his work, including academic studies and anecdotal stories from his 20 years as a Japanese language teacher in high schools, at the fifth lecture in the Research@USC series from 5.30-7.30pm.

Dr Grainger will list 10 reasons why languages matter, ranging from increasing global understanding and improving employment potential to increasing self-understanding and life skills.

"People may not realise that learning a second language can also improve our first language ability, especially regarding literacy," he said.

Dr Grainger, a member of the Sunshine Coast branch of the Modern Language Teachers' Association of Queensland, said he aimed to encourage more language students to become language teachers.

He is hopeful the Queensland Government's new Global Schools initiative could revitalise the teaching of languages across the state, with its goal to have 100% of state schools offering languages from Prep by 2025.

To register for the lecture at the USC Innovation Centre Auditorium, email ed.foshee@usc.edu.au or call 5459 4529.

Don't hang around with other expats too much and also try to learn the language. It is nice to know people from home, but the best way of settling is to get stuck in with the locals. If you show that you are trying to learn the language and are willing to join in with their (sometimes strange) local traditions, then you'll generally be greeted with warmth and friendliness.

Natalia Aleynikova's curator insight, November 6, 11:37 PM

Learning #languages is an essential part of a modern lifestyle. Even if you are not a #linguist, knowing a foreign language can become a real asset for your #business and career. Professional language learners give you some advice how to make the learning process easier and much more effective.

Ivo Nový's curator insight, November 22, 12:42 AM

One of the most common barriers to conversing in a new language is the fear of making mistakes. So, don't worry about making mistakes. Native speakers are like doting parents: any attempt from you to communicate in their language is objective proof that you are a gifted genius. They’ll appreciate your effort and even help you.

Oh, the English language. So beautiful, yet so complicated. In English, we
have alarms that “go off,” words that are their own opposites ("dust off
the dust?"), and plenty of commonly misused words in which one little vowel
completely changes a word's meaning ("stationary" vs "stationery").

The German language has its own set of challenges, but, in some cases, it
really maximizes its word count. Sure, it's not the only language to have
