TechCrunch | Google Gives Android App Inventor A New Home At MIT Media Lab

TechCrunch | Google Gives Android App Inventor A New Home At MIT Media Lab | Android for Education | Scoop.it
Back in July 2010, Google announced a nifty educational project called App Inventor. The goal? Give non-programmers a relatively easy way to build their own applications for the Android platform, using a drag-and-drop interface to add pre-written ‘chunks’ of code. It was heavily inspired by the learning language Scratch, but with an Android focus.

What does this means for schools? Students can learn simple programming with a mobile focus, supported by the popular 'Scratch' community.

Attendance - Android Market

Attendance - Android Market | Android for Education | Scoop.it
A great way to take attendance. Put your student list in a Google Spreadsheet, and this app takes care of the rest. There is no need to enter total absences into a spreadsheet.

Understandably most schools nowadays use a student management system but this app could be useful for fire drills or as an a field trip / camp attendance checker.

Swype | Text Input for Screens

Swype | Text Input for Screens | Android for Education | Scoop.it
Why type when you can swype. My LG came with Swype preinstalled and it is all I use as the text input method. I was surprised at how intuitive it was. I find it man friendly as it doesn't matter how big your fingers are an approximate swype will get you what you want.

This post is a definitely a recommendation. Check that your phone doesn't have this preinstalled first or the download won't work.

From an educational standing, I'd have to get feedback from students as to their preference.

Connect Safely |Safety Tips for GPS Location-Sharing | Safety Tips | Android for Education | Scoop.it
Most "smart phones" and even some regular cellphones allow you to run location-sharing software that uses the phone’s GPS capability to let friends and family know your exact location. There are lots of great uses for this technology: It can be an easy way to find your friends and be found by them; it can reduce anxiety for loved ones by keeping them posted on your whereabouts; and there are some fun games and activities that take advantage of it, such as scavenger hunts and services that track how often you visit certain establishments. These services are not for children under 13 and many require users to be 18, so make sure you're permitted to use an app or service, and – parents – we recommend that you ask your kids if they're using these services and how.
