Social and Location - Roamz is Our App of the Week

Social and Location - Roamz is Our App of the Week | Android apps news | Scoop.it
The future of social is in combining the various “channels” of content produced, and filtering the info for what is meaningful. Add in a healthy dollop of geo-location relevance, and you have a recipe for success.

Roamz is an interesting experiment.

As a service, it aims to scan other popular services like Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to provide users relevant data on locations around them.

New features include Google+ sign-in support, and an app layout which works similarly to the Google+ app. It’s very clean.

The idea is sublime. Rather than manually checking in with multiple individual services for info, have one service which collects it all. In practice, it works well. As more info is fed to the app, as users use it more, the listings should populate more as well. Right now, posts can sometimes be a little old.

The app has potential. It’s something like a social version of Field Trip. It needs a bit of polish, and a few more users pushing updates, but it’s an interesting solution for local and social.

G Cloud Backup 2.0 Update - n3rdabl3

G Cloud Backup 2.0 Update - n3rdabl3 | Android apps news | Scoop.it
Amanda Stephan's insight:

If you’ve got an Android device you should probably take a look at our G Cloud Backup review we did a short while ago. To re-cap, G Cloud Backup is a complete backup service for your Android device, since our review a few things have changed such as the choice of things you can have backed up. As well as what we mentioned before you can back up your Browser Data and System Settings. These are perfect for when you change your phone you can keep all of the same settings without spending hours setting your new device up!

So what’s new in 2.0?

- The ability to earn up to 8 GB Free
- The ability to only backup camera photos and videos
- Enhanced scheduling
- New Battery saving mode
- Added more files extension support
- New interface

So I’ll go through a quick run down on the new features;

You can earn up to 8GB of storage for free.

This is the usual thing you might expect from some games, if you write a review of the app there’s 300MB. Invite friends to use G Cloud Backup, 6GB. Share to Facebook, 200MB. The list goes on.

The ability to only back up camera photo’s and videos.

What this means is that instead of backing up every photo or video you have on your device, it’ll only back up the snaps and clips you take yourself with the camera app.

Enhanced Scheduling.

Before you only had the option to back up every day at a certain time. Now you have the option to pick how many days between backup as well as the option to only back up if you’re plugged in. Excellent!

New battery saving mode.

This gives you the option to completely void the back up process if your phone has less than a certain percentage of battery, complete with a handy slider you can decide exactly how much.

Added more file extensions to support.

Pretty self explanatory, this means more things can be backed up!

New interface.

This is my favourite part to any update. I love a good new interface every so often and they’ve really pulled it out of the bag with this one. They’ve decided to go with a more black Holo style interface that goes perfect with the later Android versions. Everything is much easier to locate and the most important buttons are right there so you don’t have to go searching for the Backup or Restore buttons anymore!

Check out our selected apps and let us know what your thoughts are! Happy Thanksgiving!

1. Recipe Search

This handy little app is not strictly a holiday app, yet with its enormous database of more than 150,000 recipes, we’re sure you’ll find your perfect side dish, accompanied with of course the mandatory famed turkey.

2. Thanksgiving Recipes & more

If the Recipe Search did not serve you well, then here is a Turkey-inspired App that has them organized by the course. However, this App comes in handy when you need to keep those kidos entertained; you can use the “how to” for crafts as well as some featured games that will even keep the adults entertained.

3. Greeting Card Maker

Before you started roasting the Turkey, you’ll have to get those invites in order; although it might seem like a no-brainer since the in-laws are a must, but the creepy aunt can skip the dinner. This handy app helps you customize the invites in a very nice way.

4. Turkey

The fittingly named Turkey app assures to help you roast your bird to pure perfection. Yet what makes this app so special is the crafty ideas for all those leftovers we’re bound to have after Thanksgiving.

5. Burn the Turkey – Widget

Burn the Turkey is a widget that gives you an image of a full turkey on your home screen and the number of calories you might have gained from your holiday meal (3000). Once you place the widget, you can jump over to CardioTrainer to start a workout that will track the number of calories being lost, which is reflected in the image of the turkey. Literally, you get to see the turkey disappear to a mere pile of bones on the plate.

6. How to set the table

Turns out that no one on the face of the planet is interested enough to make an app for mastering the art of napkin folding! However, this little app is handy enough for perfecting table etiquette. It includes over 40 different ways to fold your linens.

7. Strava Cycling

All those lovely dishes might be good for the eyes and tummy, yet not for your physique! This is one for the bike lovers among you. Strava takes your workouts & breaks them down to easy-to-read graphs. You can track distance, heart rate & overall progress either from the app or on Strava’s website.

8. Yelp

Now that the bird’s in the oven, everyone’s entertained and your mother-in law is happy you can leave the dishes for your partner to take care of and check out Yelp’s mobile guide for the best hubs to hit the town, and maybe you’ll even have time to catch the pumpkin pie festivities.

9. Nature Sounds Relax and Sleep

Once this tiresome day is finally behind you, you’ll definitely be in need of some serious chillaxing, especially since you’ve got some serious shopping to do in mere hours (Black Friday Sales, hello!). Our suggestion is a hot cup of cocoa while listening to Nature Sounds Relax and Sleep for Android.

10. TGI Black Friday

This app prides itself as being the most comprehensive and “complete” app for all things Black Friday, so far it’s pretty accurate. TGI Black Friday gives you the sneak previews of the best deals even before they’re available in your local news sources. Price comparisons & easy shopping lists are one of the best features.

10. Flipboard (Get it for your android) Free
One of our personal favorite iPad apps has received a number of duplicates. The main concept is to create a magazine-like news experience through integrating links from your Facebook friends, the people you follow on Twitter, your interests as well as your favorite sites. The cool thing is the fun display and how you can just flip through the content anytime you want. Using your beloved droid you’ll swipe upward to flip through pages, yet the concept remains very well interpreted through the smaller screen.
