There are currently quite a few speed reading apps being developed for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, to try and assist peole in coping with their reading. This post offers a review of 8 apps. Four are for iOS and the others are for Windows, Android, a well as web-based. Some apps offer training exercises, others use the content that you might already have. They are either free or quite cheap.

GoClass is a unique app for teaching and learning interactively within the classroom using iPads. It allows teachers to create lessons, create formative assessments, and garner student response.

This is a learning platform that is designed for common mobile devices. It offers the opportunity to help improve student engagement, classroom management and effectiveness. It is simple to use and has a step-by-step account of how to create lesson plans for your course. It includes lesson plan reviews, student notes and media annotation. You create your course, add your students then an email is sent to them giving each of them their own account details. When conducting a GoClass session you login and invite students to the session. From there it is up to you. You can also conduct assessments using the Ask feature or discussions using the Shared Whiteboarding feature. All activity is recorded on student devices for future use.

There is a limit of 30 student per class and a charge if you need to upgrade for more students than that

5 apps mentioned - 2 atleast have android versions - MyHomework and Remember the Milk. These apps can help students organise themselves keep organised. This is probably too lat for our seniors this year but they may help take the pressure and anxiety out of the demands of the school year for next year's kids. They are helpful organizer apps to assist students to keep track of what they need to do and when.

This app might be of good use in a science classroom if you cannot access some materials needed to make chemical reactions.

The free Android app is from the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. It allows students to create virtual chemical reactions on their tablets. To create the reactions students simply drag elements from the periodic table to the “reaction area.” The app includes suggested reactions to help students begin. There are almost 300 chemical reactions supported on the app. Pictures and videos related to the reactions are also included for student use.
