Apps and Sites That Work on All Devices for BYOT

Apps and Sites That Work on All Devices for BYOT | Android Apps in Education | Scoop.it

"“Honestly, I think we should be delighted people still want to read, be it on a Kindle or a Nook or whatever the latest device is.” By J.K. Rowling

With more and more schools launching, ‘Bring Your Own Technology’ or ‘Bringing Your Own Device’ (BYOT/BYOD) I created a symbaloo of all apps and web tools that work on all devices to help educators get started. Even though I am a firm believe, it doesn’t matter what site/app the students use to show mastery of a concept, some educators need a starting place and many have loved this symbaloo so I, of course, want to pass it along."

Jonathan Jarc's curator insight, June 19, 2013 5:50 PM

BYOT is a bit of a sticky wicket, but with proper planning, and an awareness of the differences of devices, it can be a reasonable and cost-effective alternative to a 1:1.

Easy to install and use this is a free app. Could be used in a variety of ways but 2 that come to mind: 1. In learning languages  - the oral component needs to be practiced constantly. They could record themselves and listen to their pronunciation. They can then evaluate it, and develop ways to improve their skills.

2. Improving reading skills - students reading a passage and record themselves reading. They could then review the reading alone or with an adult. Students will improve when they can hear their own reading, evaluate it, and make a plan on how to improve their abilities.

HomeTube - Android Apps on Google Play

HomeTube transforms your Android device into a safe, child-friendly haven where kids have instant access to watch whatever YouTube content they want from a list of content you deem suitable.
Child-friendly navigation allows kids to switch from watching a Curious George video to a Spider-man or Dora cartoon without requiring you to navigate them to the new content yourself. No more having to take hold of the device yourself to change the content that is displaying as your child's mood changes on a whim!

Rhondda Powling's insight:

A useful app for anyone using Youtube with younger students as you can control the content the students can access through YouTube to make sure the content is suitable.

Students could create their own stories, retell fairy tales/fables. They could even use the tool to create an avatar for themselves or single panel images for newspaper type cartoon. I think it could be especially useful in EAL and language studies

The Gross Science is full of "icky" info and activities that seem really quite gross to adults but which could just create some new science fans for life.
