Egyptians get credited for many new discoveries but now studies show us that they might have dealt with dentistry way before we even knew about. Egyptians were able to find food that were nutritiousness for mouth bacteria.

Rowena ButedHIST1014's insight:

The jaw of a 6,500 year old jaw was found that has bee found. What is significant here is that the jaw was able to show remnants of fillings. The article reads that they used beeswax as a form of tooth filling. This is very interesting to read because I am trying to figure out HOW they knew how about tooth decay and plaque in teeth without a microscope or x-ray technology to see it. I am curious to learn more about the topi of dentistry in the ancient world.

Interesting remedy facts the Ancient Egyptians used to use..
Rowena ButedHIST1014's insight:

This short video talks about the importance of several different things. One important item that they mentioned was honey! It was said that the sweetness of the honey had many healing powers in Egypt. They also stated that Egyptians had the  oldest and first type of healing. I would like to learn more about the egyptian medical civilization and compare that to how today's medical society is.

This is a very interesting video that informs us of the remedies Egyptians used in the past to cure illnesses, aches, pains, and anything that needed some fixing. An example is that they used mashed garlic cloves with vinegar and water to cure sore throats and toothaches. Good stuff.

Rowena ButedHIST1014's insight:

This article was similar to the other one that I have scooped. It is about the Black Death plague. The article reported 25 million deaths due to this strain of pathogen. What was different from this and the other article on the topic was that this article presented insight that explained how public health can work backwards. By this, the article goes into explaining that the plague will always be there and to eliminate it, we must kill all humans and animals to "start clean."

This article was very interesting. It was about the findings of skeletons in Ancient Egypt. What  made its significance was the teaching that told researchers that the wealthiest of the people in that era still suffered from preventable diseases. This article was different from most that I've ever read because most articles talk about the ancients having substantially better health than what people have now. The life span was estimated to be up to 30 years old and there were rather high infant mortality rates.

Rowena ButedHIST1014's insight:

This is a very long documentary about how ancients have healed the sick and diseased. One procedure that was discussed was brought by a man named "Galen" (not exactly sure on the spelling) who was highly looked at for treating his patients. What he brought to the world was the process of bleeding continuously. They cut the vein and they would let the toxins flow out of the body itself. Another was the use of leeches that aided in areas where oxygen was low. Today, amputation would be used. But they believed that leeches would redistribute oxygen and blood to the appropriate areas!

Ancient Greeks and the Quantified Self | Sustainable Health | Ancient Health & Medicine | Scoop.it

Healthcare in the United States is in a rut. Though our system is the most technologically advanced andheavily funded, we are losing ground in our attempt to stay healthy. The most worrisome of the looming burdens is the convergence of two key factors: an aging society and nationwide abuse of caloric surplus. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 2 American adults live with at least one chronic illness while the majority of adults over 20 (68%) are obese or overweight. By 2017, we estimate the world population 65 years and over will outnumber children under the age of 5 for the first time in human history. In some countries, this transition has already taken place.
