Oligarchies were the most common form of government in ancient Greece.  Oligarchies were mostly run by the wealthiest citizens in a state.  Many were overthrown by tyrants so it would seem that oligarchies were not popular with the people.

Robert Felix Lindley Jr.'s curator insight, May 16, 2014 10:08 PM

This passage gives a generous amount of info on the Greek Archaic period. Going over how the Greeks during the Archaic period were developing there footing as separate tribes traveling around and sometimes settling. These tribes eventually became the city-states we know of today. Towards the end of the Archaic period the Greeks started developing different forms of government leading up to the forming of a democratic government inspiring governments of generations to come.
