2,000-year-old carving depicts stylishly plump Africa princess

2,000-year-old carving depicts stylishly plump Africa princess | Ancient Egypt and Nubia | Scoop.it

A 2,000-year-old relief carved with an image of what appears to be a stylishly overweight princess has been discovered in an "extremely fragile" palace in the ancient city of Meroë, in Sudan, archaeologists say.

At the time the relief was made, Meroë was the center of a kingdom named Kush, its borders stretching as far north as the southern edge of Egypt. It wasn't unusual for queens (sometimes referred to as "Candaces") to rule, facing down the armies of an expanding Rome.

This gold and carnelian necklace, an artifact from Ancient Nubia, is on view now at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts's newly opened exhibition Gold & The Gods: Jewels of Ancient Nubia. The necklace features 54 gold pendants molded into the forms of a woman wearing the White Crown of Egypt and a ram's head wearing a double uraeus and sun disk. The ram's head is most certainly a representation of the mighty god Amani.

Unraveling the Mystery of the Bearded Man -

Unraveling the Mystery of the Bearded Man - | Ancient Egypt and Nubia | Scoop.it

He looks almost Byzantine or Greek, gazing doe-eyed over the viewer’s left shoulder, his mouth forming a slight pout, like a star-struck lover or perhaps a fan of the races witnessing his favorite charioteer losing control of his horses.

Shonda Brock's insight:

"The Bearded Man is a “mummy portrait” of a Roman-Egyptian, dating back to 170-180 AD, which was found attached to his sarcophagus, although it has since become separated from his mummy and coffin and so his true identity has become lost to the pages of history."

Last month I was tagged on the Meet My Main Character blog tour on My Sweet Delirium by Christa Wojo.

Here are the rules

The taggee must write a post answering the same seven questions about their MC. Then the taggee becomes the tagger and chooses five other authors. It’s sort of like a chain letter with all the potential to become a global virus.

So sorry, dear characters...

We’ll be hanging out all your dirty laundry for everyone to see. You better put on your dark sunglasses and prepare to fend off the paparazzi.
