Archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of a prehistoric Tequesta Indian village in a downtown Miami city block slated for development, prompting calls for the site's preservation.

The archaeologists, under the direction of veteran South Florida archaeologist Bob Carr, have so far painstakingly dug up eight large circles comprised of uniformly carved holes in the native limestone that they believe to be foundation holes for Tequesta Indian dwellings dating as far back as 2,000 years.

At the heart of a $600 million complex of Miami condo and office towers, a network of holes in the ground has provided new insight into the people there first.

The holes lay out the foundations of a prehistoric settlement of the ancient Tequesta tribe at the confluence of the Miami River and Biscayne Bay. The Tequesta lived in what's now metro Miami until the 1700s, and the holes held pine posts that framed their thatched buildings.
