These people started "urban entities" around 1500 BC. Plus they set up trade posts around the Mediterrenian sea around 800 BC in competition with the Greeks to the best of my understanding.

The Phoenicians were an early trading group.  They are known for their alphabet as well as the purple dye that they created.
