» Living in a Brainwashed Culture of Urgency - Mindfulness and Psychotherapy | An Evolving Life | Scoop.it
For quite some time now we've been brainwashed into seeing so many things as urgent. How do we break from this illusion and step back into our lives.

Via Bup Woon Sunim, Hae Kwang Sunim, Luis Valdes, Jocelyn Stoller
Leslie Malin, LCSW-R's insight:

Stop and consider...As a society we are addicted to urgency.  Yes, it's an addiction.  We try to slow down our minds and we get anxious, restless, and can't sit focus.  Our bodies react likewise- we tap our feet, we can't get comfortable, our breathing gets shallow. Everything screams out for that drug, coffee, drink. Or, in this case, Urgency. Answering phones, checking that email, wrting that text; Pinterest, Facebook, Blog, Whatever.  I ask you this. What in your life is really IMPORTANT?  Is it the same things that are filling your life and days with urgency?

Bup Woon Sunim's curator insight, June 17, 2013 5:57 PM

It is no wonder we, as a culture, are so stressed. Everything is designed to grab our attention and take our focus away from really living in the moment. We need to learn to resist all of these attention grabbers and pay attention to what is happening right in front of us.

AOL News has this fascinating article on successful people and emotional intelligence: How Emotionally Intelligent Are You? Here's How To Tell The Huffington Post | By Carolyn GregoirePosted: 12/05/2013 8:39 am EST ...
Leslie Malin, LCSW-R's insight:

The questions posed for your self-evaluation are quite meaningful I think.  I don't think we "always" do things, at least I don't, but if we strive to achieve these ways of being we do achieve more success both internally and in the world.  How do you do on these ways of being? Where are your greatest challenges, hey we all have them. And, if you have achieved more EI in certain areas, please share how you have done so.  EI is not in-born, it comes from our interface with life and how we choose to be involved.  Would love to hear what you think.

Creating a Better Life - Victory Over Ones-self

It is a quote, as I recall it, from an unknown author that guides my life - " MANS GREATEST SUCCESS IS VICTORY OVER HIMSELF. " Always focused on improving ever aspect of my life, I regularly read...
Leslie Malin, LCSW-R's insight:

I so agree with this quotation. We are are greatest adversaries as well as our greatest teachers.  Whenever we find the courage to transcend aspects of ourselves that keep us locked in ways, situations and relationships that no longer serve us, we not only create a better life for ourselves, but also for others who are affected and, perhaps, inspired by our victories.

It takes time to change as it requires the understanding, re-living and integration of experience within a relationship that lends a human context to what has been lived.

Perhaps you will have greater understanding and compassion for yourself and others in the quest for making and refashioning our lives.  Now a days so many people judge themselves by the medical model of insurance companies. Change doesn't happen in 12 sessions!

Psychology books of the year – review

Psychology books of the year – review | An Evolving Life | Scoop.it
Books with a literary or philosophical angle gained the ascendancy in 2013 after a period of domination by the neuroscientists, writes Lisa Appignanesi (Psychology books of the year – review http://t.co/Uv9Hrt2t9O)...
Leslie Malin, LCSW-R's insight:

I have not yet read any of these, but they do sound intriguing don't you think? Have to put them on my to buy and to read list.  To be honest, I have to admit to buying books as if they will disappear and then...fail to read them. What's that about??? The bright, shiny object syndrome perhaps?  Happy reading to you as the year nears to a close and we begin 2014.

Focusing: A way to deepen experiencing for more effective psychotherapy | INWARD BOUND: North Vancouver Therapy :: vancouver therapists, best therapists vancouver | An Evolving Life | Scoop.it

In the mid 1960s, a philosophy student named Eugene Gendlin started asking some hard questions about the process of psychotherapy: “Why doesn’t therapy succeed more often?… When it does succeed, what is it that those patients and therapists do? What is it that the majority fail to do?”

Via focusing_gr
Leslie Malin, LCSW-R's insight:

I have increasingly been introducing my clients to this powerful process.  When clients, and myself, use this approach we get an immediate sense of distance, a decrease in emotionality, and an increase in understanding and self-compassion.  Clients can easily integrate this approach into their day to day dealings with powerful emotions, obessive thoughts, and all matter of self-doubt. There is a good deal of information on line and some wonderful tutorials by Anne Weiser Cornell.
