Being Valentino Rossi

Being Valentino Rossi | ammar | Scoop.it

Rossi’s Yamaha comeback, coupled with his encouraging results in testing so far this year, have rekindled a light that never went out for the legions of number 46 followers. Quite simply, many just never lost faith in the nine-time world champion. This is very much confirmed in the March edition of Riders.

The support has come flooding in for a competitor who sparks passion in abundance. They range from Hollywood actors such as Daniel Day-Lewis and Brad Pitt to Italian celebrities and a selection of institutions, colleagues, friends, sponsors and fans.

“He’s an idol for me,” says Pitt, who last visited the MotoGP paddock at Mugello in 2008. “I would give anything to be him. He’s got speed and balance – pure art. To watch him is like reading a poem.” Day-Lewis describes the Italian as ‘a genius’. “(A rider’s) work requires both discipline and a wild spirit. He has his practical side, but at the same time there is something there that is simply intangible.”

Stefano Scippa | Immaculate Breakfast

Scrive Stefano Scippa:

Tiziano at Scuderie del Quirinale | ammar | Scoop.it

Retrace the steps of the artistic career of the great venetian painter, Tiziano.

The grand tour of Tiziano on display at the Scuderie del Quirinale
From March 5th, visitors can relive the artistic career of the great Venetian painter Tiziano through his extensive exhibit on display at the Scuderie del Quirinale. Included in the display are some of the painter’s early works when he trained under the supervision of other great artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione in Venice. The exhibit also takes an in-depth look at the painter’s early days, the rise of his career and important works that he was commissioned to do by imperial figures such as Charles V and his son Philip II. Several of Tiziano’s most prominent works on loan from other prominent galleries and museums are featured in the exhibit including ‘The Concert’ and ‘La Bella’ from Palazzo Pitti; ‘Flora’ from the Uffizi; ‘Danaë and the Shower of Gold’ from Capodimonte; the ‘Gozzi Altarpiece’ from Ancona and ‘Charles V with a Dog’ and the ‘Self-portrait’ from the Prado. The display of Tiziano’s works will follow the painter’s career in sequence, decade by decade. An additional pivotal part of the exhibit for visitors will be the comparison of the painter’s ‘Crucifixion’ from the Dominican church in Ancona, the ‘Crucifixion’ for the Escorial in Madrid, and the ‘Crucifixion’ on display in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. The Tiziano exhibit will remain on display at the Scuderie del Quirinale until June 16th.

How to Dress Like an Italian: Spring Edition

How to Dress Like an Italian: Spring Edition | ammar | Scoop.it

Everyone’s heard about Italian fashion—which means some travelers worry about what to wear in Italy.
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to dress exactly like an Italian, and no one will expect you to! The most important thing to keep in mind is to wear what makes you most comfortable. That’s not always (or even usually) what Italians will be wearing… and that’s perfectly okay.
That said, a lot of travelers do want to try to dress like the locals when they travel. They see it as a way to “blend in” a bit more (although, of course, keep in mind that you’ll still be given away by something, like your hand gestures or even makeup—before you even open your mouth!). Plus, we love the idea of cultural immersion while traveling. And since fashion is an important part of Italian culture, what could be a more fun kind of cultural immersion than dressing as the locals do?
Need some tips to get started on how to dress like the Italians?
Here’s your checklist of items to look out for—and that you’ll see lots of Italians wearing—in the spring!

A light jacket, or trench coat, for women [...]A well-tailored jacket, for men [...]A great pair of sunglasses [...]Pants in fun colors - like green, red, or pink (yes, for men, too!) [...]Leather or suede shoes [...]Jewelry, for women [...]Scarves, for both genders [...]A chic handbag, for women—or a “man bag,” for men [...]

Taking the Train in Italy - Instructions

Italy is extremely well connected by its railway system, so there is truly no reason why any traveler would go through the hassle of renting a car and dealing with the inevitable migraine-inducing traffic jams, poor street signs, and scarce parking. Unfortunately there are still areas, especially in the mountains and countryside, where trains cannot get to. Still, trains should be the first option for independent travelers, especially when connecting between major city centers. To make sure you choose the right type of train to reach your destination, review the following guidelines and you'll be on your way to an easy and stress-free ride.

TYPES OF TRAINS:

EUROSTAR also called by the names Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Freccia Bianca.
Intercity/Eurocity (also marked as IC and EC) – These trains stop in all the major cities, but not every single town - it's a less expensive, slower, and less fancy option than the Eurostar.
Espresso (E), Diretto (D), Regionale (R), and Interregionale (IR) – These trains make ALL the stops, will get you to the small towns and big towns. The slowest, but these trains are also the cheapest. They are more similar to a light-rail type of transportation for commuters and students.

IMPORTANT: If you purchase a ticket on trains OTHER than the Eurostar, you MUST stamp your ticket prior to getting on the train in one of the YELLOW machines within the train station. Don't forget as failing to do this will ensure an expensive penalty by the onboard ticket agent! Purchasing a ticket for the Eurostar includes a reservation and assigned seat, while seats on other trains are on a first-come first-served basis.

PURCHASING YOUR TRAIN TICKETS:

STEP 1: Know your train station names. STEP 2: Choose your train and purchase your ticket.

When you purchase your Eurostar ticket, you’ll have a reservation for a specific train as well as assigned seats. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can simply take note of the TRAIN NUMBER (marked as Treno ES Italia AV + the number), the Departure Time, the Coach (or Carrozza in Italian), the Seat Number (or Posti in Italian), and the PNR or Ticket Code.

To check train schedules and purchase your tickets ahead of time: <http://trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html>;

STEP 3: Get on the right train!

PAY ATTENTION! When you are looking for your train, be sure to look at the electronic timetable (PARTENZE – departures) and search for the train number and the time it is scheduled to leave. DO NOT LOOK AT THE DESTINATION! The destination indicated on the timetable for a certain train may NOT necessarily match your final destination. Your train may be directed to Naples, but your destination may be a stop along the way, like Rome. So make sure to get on the right train! Also, you will need to look for the correct binario (BIN) which is the track where the train is stationed. Then, look at your ticket and look for the number next to the word CARROZZA (that is the train car number you want to board). Next, you want to look for your seat number, marked on the ticket after the word POSTI.

A word of caution: Train stations are usually crowded, so watch your belongings as there can be pick-pockets and pan-handlers.

The “panno Casentino”: One small error for Tuscany becomes one lasting memory for fashion

The “panno Casentino”: One small error for Tuscany becomes one lasting memory for fashion | ammar | Scoop.it

Only the innovative nature of the Italians can turn inexperience and a huge miscalculation into a fashion statement. And only those Italians from Tuscany knew how to make it a statement that would last through the test of time.
Wool has been a constant, thriving economic force in Italy as far back as the Etruscans, Romans and the Medici Family. It is a well known fact that the banking houses in Florence built their wealth on the wool industry. The Casentino Valley, where the Arno river starts its trek to Florence, was perhaps one of the largest suppliers of high quality woolen products in Tuscany.
In the late 1800’s they sought to further commercialize their natural resource, and a “mantelline per cavalcature” was introduced to the Florentine market. This was basically a thick, water resistant blanket used to cover, keep warm and protect work animals that hauled large loads.
Traditionally, this cover was made in a deep red – but due to an error when they mixed the chemicals to soften the wool, the color came out a vivid orange. Like most trends, it was a twist of fate that turned this rough cloth with its unique color, fashionable.
The “panno Casentino” was admired by illustrious names such as Baron Ricasoli and the opera composers Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. The result was that this brightly colored felted wool was fashioned into a double breasted jacket complete with a fox fur collar which became a very Italian symbol of wealth and prestige of the upper echelon.

A reputation that is still widely recognized in Italy today.
