Live: Dr. John Takes A Trip Through Louis Armstrong's Catalog At BAM - New York Music - Sound of the City

Live: Dr. John Takes A Trip Through Louis Armstrong's Catalog At BAM - New York Music - Sound of the City | American Crossroads | Scoop.it

Better than: The time when nobody talked about Louis Armstrong being hip. (Which he was.)

As Louis Armstrong tributes go, this one—the first installment of "Insides Out," Dr. John's three-week residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music— sidestepped (thankfully) the sanctimony of most such affairs. There were some obvious markers. Five trumpeters—three of them born, bred, and now living in New Orleans—guested through the night with Dr. John's nine-piece band. Nineteen songs were culled from Armstrong's recorded oeuvre. At one point halfway through, Dr. John looked up and said a few words about Armstrong's legacy and our collective "duty to keep it alive, to pass it on down like he did."

Reviving James Booker, The 'Piano Prince Of New Orleans' : NPR

An upcoming documentary highlights the life of the man many called New Orleans' best pianist in a hundred years. Every day in New Orleans, Lily Keber rolls out of bed and walks to a flat, minor office building to meet her muse. Keber makes a cup of coffee with chicory, hooks up her computer and waits for what sounds like a dozen spiders to crawl across a piano.

Keber is making Bayou Maharajah, a documentary about the black, gay, one-eyed junkie, James Booker, the "Piano Prince of New Orleans." Booker, who tutored Dr. John and Harry Connick Jr., was the first to call his fingers "spiders on the keys."

Album of the Week #19 - Foggy Mountain Banjo

Album of the Week #19 - Foggy Mountain Banjo | American Crossroads | Scoop.it
On Sunday, my father (Joe Mullins) and I sat and listened to every minute of a funeral for a man I had only been around once. Why would the passing of someone who I didn’t even know personally cause my eyes to swell up with tears?

For one, there is enough evidence to suggest that there would not be bluegrass music without Earl Scruggs. The middle finger on his right hand transformed the banjo from what was often little more than a stage prop, to a powerful tool for solo and accompaniment playing with seemingly endless possibilities. Earl’s unique style of playing the banjo was the missing piece to Monroe’s puzzle, and solidified what we now know as bluegrass.
