Old music: Sonny and Terry - People Get Ready

Terry, a harmonica player from Greensboro, Georgia, hooked up with McGhee – ex-member of the fabled Rabbit Foot Minstrels – in the 1940s; famously, towards the end of a long and fruitful partnership that saw them surf different trends, becoming stars of the 60s blues revival, they couldn't stand the sight of each other. (Or rather, each other's presence; Terry injured his eyes in childhood and was blind by the age of 16.)

Wilco and Billy Bragg Announce Details of Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions Box Set | News | Pitchfork | American Crossroads | Scoop.it

In 1998, Wilco teamed up with English singer-activist Billy Bragg to release Mermaid Avenue, an album featuring unearthed lyrics by Woody Guthrie, the iconic folk singer. Mermaid Avenue Vol. II followed in 2000.
And now, 12 years later, Nonesuch will release a box set titled Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions. It contains the two previously released albums along with Mermaid Avenue Vol. III , which collects 17 previously unreleased recordings. The box also features the 1999 film Man in the Sand, directed by Kim Hopkins, which documented the sessions, as well as a 48-page book with photographs, reproductions of Guthrie's sketches and lyric sheets, and new liner notes by Guthrie's daughter, Nora Guthrie.

Music Review: Lyle Lovett – Release Me [Curb/Universal]

Music Review: Lyle Lovett – Release Me [Curb/Universal] | American Crossroads | Scoop.it

As a part of what Steve Earle called “Nashville’s great credibility scare of the mid ’80s.” Lyle Lovett, along with Earle, k.d. Lang, Dwight Yoakam and others took up the traditionalist Outlaw mantel of the 70′s and reinvigorated country music from it’s soft-rock and Urban Cowboy influence the times. . . . Lovett continues a late career trend of including cover songs. You might conclude that this last release would be a weakened collection to meet contractual obligations. You would be wrong in that assessment.

From his porch in the Treme, the drummer can see where slaves congregated for Sunday drum circles, where Professor Longhair lived and where gospel choirs sing. No wonder he proudly steeps himself in his city's musical tradition.

The Gospel Spirit

The Gospel Spirit | American Crossroads | Scoop.it

Back in this post, we featured a carefully selected playlist of songs best suited for Sunday mornings, when godless ingrates like me are busy reading the Times and sipping artisinal coffee. . . . As we pointed out a couple of years ago, that playlist was designed to accompany Arts and Leisure, not necessarily to instill a sense of religious fervor in the faithful. No, I saved those tunes for this post – a sampling of songs by a few of our favorite gospel artists. So put down the paper, crank up the laptop, get your ass off the couch and spread some joy… even if the congregation amounts to a fairly jaded spousal unit and a few nervous pets.

Josh Ritter – Little Darlings

When songwriters sing of “Darlings,” I can’t help but cringe. I think of the cheesy “darling.” You know, that one you picture in your head from a late-stage Clapton or a young Springsteen.
