Can Surfing Reprogram the Veteran’s Brain?

Can Surfing Reprogram the Veteran’s Brain? | Society and culture: The English speaking world | Scoop.it
There's no quick fix for post-traumatic stress disorder, but research has shown that surfing's physicality and flow can give victims some relief and a way forward. The author hit the water with his close friend Brian, a former Navy SEAL whose service in Afghanistan beat up his body, tortured his mind, and pushed him into a zone where violence—against himself or others—seemed inevitable.

Lack Of Up-To-Date Research Complicates Gun Debate | Society and culture: The English speaking world | Scoop.it
Vice President Joe Biden says his task force on reducing gun violence is facing an unexpected obstacle: slim or outdated research on weapons. Public health research dried up more than a decade ago after Congress restricted the use of some federal money to pay for those studies.

snopes.com: Urban Outfitters Sells Bloody Kent State Shirt

snopes.com: Urban Outfitters Sells Bloody Kent State Shirt | Society and culture: The English speaking world | Scoop.it
Urban Outfitters offered an item appearing to be bloodstained Kent State sweatshirt for sale.
Rasma's insight:

Coincidence or clever marketing?

This is an interesting item to discuss for how it reveals attitudes and events that have shaped the modern American mindset and culture.  Also, Kent State is an historical reference our students should know about.

One can also question Urban Outfitters capitalizing ($129!!) for a shirt found at a thrift shop. Is that what they are doing?

LRB · Neal Ascherson · What sort of Scotland?

LRB · Neal Ascherson · What sort of Scotland? | Society and culture: The English speaking world | Scoop.it
It was nothing but questions for the bus party. We heard them all across Scotland, we asked them and we tried to provoke them. The bus party, a dozen or so of us, writers and musicians, had decided not to urge one particular answer to the biggest question, the one on the referendum ballot . . .
Rasma's insight:

I like this idea of a nation without a strong national identity, more of a geographical belonging than an ideological or historical one. Hey - It would make for world peace!

Snopes.com is a very good source for verifying the sort of urban myths that so easily and readily circulate on the internet. I went there expecting to find that this set of rumored quotations was false. Snopes in their very thorough way provide sources and context for all the remarks.

Shockingly, they are true. Could be compared to some of the South African politician's remarks about AIDS.

Sharing is the norm online, and secrecy is out. But what is the psychological and cultural fallout from the end of privacy, asks Alex Preston
Rasma's insight:

After studying Animal Farm, my Vg3 social studies class took a look at the question, "Are we living in Orwellian times?" Several news articles in the spring of 2014 were addressing that. A topic that will become more and more important.

What is the cost of a "free" web?
